"Pioneers of Prehistoric North Africa: The Iberomaurusian Legacy in Northeast Morocco — Oldest Surgery, Ornaments, Agriculture, and Symbolic Rituals"

Abstract

This study synthesizes the latest archaeological findings from Northeast Morocco’s Iberomaurusian sites (23,000–5,700 BP), emphasizing groundbreaking discoveries that redefine our understanding of early human innovation. Key highlights include the oldest symbolic shell ornaments in Africa (~82,000 BP), earliest cranial surgery (~13,000 BP), and Africa’s first evidence of pottery and domesticated crops (~7,600 BP). These sites reveal a culturally complex society with advanced ritual practices, ecological adaptability, and trans-Mediterranean connections.

I. Caves with Human Remains & Ancient DNA: Ritual, Medicine, and Symbolism

1. Taforalt (Grotte des Pigeons)

Location: Aït Yznassen Mountains, Eastern Rif.

Age: ~15,000–12,500 cal BP.

Key Features:

Genetic Data:

Y-DNA E-M78 (E1b1b); mtDNA U6/M1, linking to ancient North African & Amazigh populations.

Largest Iberomaurusian cemetery: 180+ burials with ritual dental ablation (90% lack upper incisors).

Oldest cranial surgery: Trepanation (~13,000 BP) with healed edges.

Oldest herbal medicine: Artemisia residues linked to wound care.

Diet: Faunal analysis indicates animal protein was consumed seasonally, with Barbary sheep being the primary hunted species.
Barbary sheep, gazelle, hartebeest, snails.
50% plant protein (acorns, pine nuts).

Ephedra in burials: Ritual/medicinal use of stimulant plants.

2. Ifri n’Ammar

Location: Aït Bouyahyi, Eastern Rif.

Age: ~82,000–11,500 BP (Aterian to Iberomaurusian).

Key Features:

Oldest symbolic ornaments in Africa: Perforated Nassarius gibbosulus shell beads (~82,000 BP).

Oldest North African rock art: Geometric engravings (~15,000 BP).

Burials: Infant and seated adult interments (~18,000–14,000 BP).

Cultural continuity: Overlaps Aterian and Iberomaurusian toolkits.

3. Ifri Oudadane

Location: Aït Said, Mediterranean coast near Nador.

Age: ~12,000–5,700 cal BP.

Key Features:

Oldest African pottery: Cardium-impressed ceramics (~7,600 cal BP).

Oldest African agriculture: Domesticated lentils (~7,600 cal BP).

Neolithic transition: Synchronous with Andalusia, Spain (~7,300 cal BP).

Child burial: Iberomaurusian funerary rites.

4. Ifri Ouzabour

Location: Aït Said, Eastern Rif.

Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP.

Key Features:

Child burials with dental ablation: Mirrors Taforalt’s rituals.

Ochre use: Red pigment in graves.

Marine exchange networks: Nassarius shells from the coast.

II. Subsistence and Technological Sites

1. Hassi Berkane

Location: Aït Bouyahyi, Eastern Rif.

Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP.

Diet: Giant snail middens (escargotière).

Significance: Seasonal mollusk exploitation.

2. Mtili

Location: Kebdana, Eastern Rif.

Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP.

Diet: Barbary sheep and land snails.

Significance: Mixed hunting-gathering strategies.

3. El Zafrin

Location: Kebdana, Eastern Rif.

Age: ~14,000–12,000 BP.

Technology: Moulouya chert bladelet production.

III. Lithic Extraction Networks

Procurement sites critical for Iberomaurusian toolmaking:

Ain Zohra: Metalsa - Eastern Rif - Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP.
Gray-brown chert dominated late-period tools.

Oumazzine: Ait Sidel - Guelaya - Eastern Rif - Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP.
Rare yellow-red chert indicating long-distance trade.

Moulouya: Kebdana - Eastern Rif (Ait Sidel - Guelaya - Eastern Rif - Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP. )
High-quality chert for bladelets.

Ammorene: Ait Sidel - Guelaya - Eastern Rif - Age: ~15,000–12,000 BP.
Volcanic rhyolite/basalt tools.

Key Contributions to Human History

Symbolic Revolution:

Ifri n’Ammar’s 82,000-year-old shell beads represent Africa’s oldest jewelry, predating Eurasian examples.

Medical Innovation:

Taforalt’s trepanation and Artemisia use reflect early surgical and herbal knowledge.

Agricultural Pioneering:

Ifri Oudadane’s lentils and pottery mark Africa’s earliest Neolithic transition.

Ritual Complexity:

Dental ablation, ochre burials, and Ephedra use signal shared identity and spirituality.

Conclusion

The Iberomaurusian culture of Northeast Morocco in Rif (23,000–5,700 BP) was a nexus of innovation, blending symbolic expression, medical ingenuity, and ecological adaptation. Their legacy—seen in the oldest shell ornaments, earliest surgery, and first African agriculture—positions them as pioneers of Holocene cultural advancements in North Africa.
