Wolf and the Kid

A Kid was perched up on the top of a house, and
looking down saw a Wolf passing under him. Immediately
he began to revile and attack his enemy. ‘Murderer and
thief,’ he cried, ‘what do you here near honest folks’
houses? How dare you make an appearance where your
vile deeds are known?’
‘Curse away, my young friend,’ said the Wolf.
‘It is easy to be brave from a safe distance.’

The C**k and the Pearl
A c**k was once strutting up and down the farmyard
among the hens when suddenly he espied something
shinning amid the straw. ‘Ho! ho!’ quoth he, ‘that’s for
me,’ and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. What
did it turn out to be but a Pearl that by some chance had
been lost in the yard? ‘You may be a treasure,’ quoth
Master C**k, ‘to men that prize you, but for me I would
rather have a single barley-corn than a peck of pearls.’
Precious things are for those that can prize them.
