I always try to take advantage of the vacation period with my family to pass lessons away from teaching. This time we stood on the outskirts of Sebta, the occupied land, and exactly where Abd al-Rahman al-Dakhil ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, the renewer of the Umayyad dynasty in Andalusia, stood. The occasion is conditional on us telling our children how this Umayyad (the renegade as the Abbasids called him) stuck to his dream and how he patiently waited for the return of his servant Badr from Andalusia, taking with him the pledge of allegiance to the loyalists in a historical epic that delayed the fall of Andalusia for three centuries. History is necessary to build the present and foresight the future
