DENMARK TIGHTENS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RULES IN SCHOOLS

Denmark announced new measures to verify that upper-secondary students genuinely understand the written assignments they submit. Among them, students will have to defend certain assignments orally to demonstrate that they know and understand their content.

The decision responds to concerns about tools such as ChatGPT being used to complete entire assignments without sufficient student participation. One affected assignment will be the SSO, a written assessment taken by around 9,000 Danish students each year. Authorities also want more assignments completed under supervision and stronger controls over devices during examinations.

The authorities are not proposing a complete ban on artificial intelligence. Some institutions allow generative AI when students clearly disclose how they used it. The new measures aim to prevent technology from replacing reasoning and learning.
