🌍 Call for Papers: Transition to a Low-Carbon Future and its Impacts on the Global South 🌿

The global shift towards a low-carbon economy is not just about reducing emissions; it’s about fundamentally transforming social-ecological systems worldwide. The Global South, home to vast reserves of critical resources like lithium, cobalt, rare earth elements, land, and water is key to powering this green revolution. However, while these resources are vital to the technologies driving decarbonization, their over-extraction often exacerbates socio-economic inequality, threatens human security and rights, and compromises resilience and development. Local communities, particularly rural and indigenous populations, face significant risks, including environmental degradation, loss of livelihoods, and displacement.

We invite thought leaders, researchers, and practitioners to tackle these pressing questions and explore the following:

• How can we ensure that the Global South benefits equitably from its resources, safeguarding both human security and rights, and enhance its development and resilience in this ecological transition process?
• How can we turn these challenges into opportunities for sustainable development, local empowerment, and fair governance in the perspective of global wealth redistribution and equitable benefit-sharing?
• What role can South-South cooperation play in these shifting geopolitical dynamics of resources, while reducing dependency on the Global North during the transition to a low-carbon future?
• How can we strengthen governance and international policies to enable these pathways ?

With a great pleasure, I am sharing with you our latest book titled: "Climate-Smart and Resilient Food Systems and Security"

Co-edited by: Mohamed Behnassi, Abdulmalek A. Al-Shaikh, Riaz Hussain Qureshi, Mirza Barjees Baig, Turki Khalufa A. F***j

Link: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-65968-3

About the book:

This contributed book, as a part of a series of CERES publications, contributes to the scientific debate about the interlinkages between climate change, environment, and food systems. It highlights the opportunities to accelerate the transformation of such systems within the perspective of sustainable, inclusive, and climate-smart practices. Most chapters are based on empirical research particularly done in vulnerable and resource-constrained countries from the Global South (such as India, Kenya, Pakistan, South Asia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Morocco) and provide policy-oriented inputs and recommendations to guide change processes at multiple scales. This project has implications for research, innovation, and policy design.

Happy to share with my network the latest book I have jointly edited with some scholars from KSA, USA, and Morocco. The book, published by Springer in march 2024, is titled “The Water, Climate, and Food Nexus - Linkages, Challenges and Emerging Solutions”.

For more information: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-50962-9

The book is published by: the Center for Environment, Human Security & Governance (CERES) in collaboration with the Prince Sultan Institute for Environmental, Water & Desert Research, King Saud University, KSA.

Prefaced by: Dr Rachael McDonnell (Deputy Director General of the International Water Management Institute - IWMI), Prof. Dr. Eddy J. Moors (Rector IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, The Netherlands), and Prof. Shahbaz Khan (Director of UNESCO Multisectoral Regional Office for East Asia and UNESCO Representative to China DPRK, Japan Mongolia and ROK).

About the book:

This contributed book, as a part of a series of CERES publications, provides a multi-regional and cross-sectoral analysis of the interlinkages, challenges, and emerging responses in the areas of water security, climate change, and food systems, especially in a context marked by severe implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased climate vulnerability of many regions already water stressed, and an ambitious global action aiming at curbing climate change and restoring ecosystem. In the first set of chapters, the water, food, and environmental/climate security nexus is explored theoretically and by reference to empirical research covering many regions and sectors. In another set of chapters, the impacts of climate change on water resources and water-stressed regions are identified along with their implications for food systems and security. Other chapters of the volume identify the emerging solutions to the nexus challenges, mainly adaptation and mitigation options, governance and management approaches, technological and economic solutions, innovative farming and water management practices, etc. Most chapters scheduled for publication address timely and future-oriented topics, are based on empirical research particularly done in water-constrained and climate vulnerable countries from Asia, Africa, and the MENA region, and provide policy-oriented inputs and recommendations to guide change processes at multiple scales.

Editors: Mohamed Behnassi, Mirza Barjees Baig, Mohamed Taher SraĂŻri, Abdlmalek A. Alsheikh, and Ali Wafa A. Abu Risheh
© Springer 2022
DOI: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-92738-7

About the book:
The resilience of food systems and security to emerging challenges and threats, especially in the context of environmental and climate risks and global pandemics such as the Covid-19 crisis, is currently gaining growing importance in research, policy, and practice. Based on this, the core focus of this book, as a part of a series of CERES publications, consists of identifiying and exploring the best ways to overcome such challenges and shocks and to build resilience in the Global South. More precisely, the book analyzes current dynamics and trends related to the climate resilience of food security and assess the relevance of emerging approaches such as climate-smart agriculture, new roles of agriculture extension, smart farming, and climate adaptation of farming systems. The book includes both conceptual and empirical research reporting lessons learned from many geographical, environmental, social, and policy settings while focusing on Africa, Middle East, and Asia. It also provides research and policy-oriented inputs and recommendations to guide change processes at multiple scales.

Our newly published contributed volume titled:

Social-Ecological Systems (SES) - From Risks and Insecurity to Viability and Resilience

Edited by: Behnassi M., Gupta H., El Haiba M., and Gopichandran R.
Publisher: Springer International Publishing, 2021
DOI: https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-76247-6

This book contributes to the multidisciplinary debate about social–ecological systems (SES) within the perspective of rethinking the nature of interaction between these systems, especially in the Anthropocene Era. Most chapters either deliberate on risk dynamics threatening current SES or stimulate thought processes to manage such risks and related negative implications. After analyzing the main drivers of SES vulnerability, the book highlights the shifts to be made to enhance the sustainability and resilience of these systems, mainly the integration and restructuring of governance frameworks, the reorganization of production and consumption systems far from conventional models based on consumerism, the elaboration of mitigation, adaptation, and SDGs implementation measures from a co-benefit perspective, and the consideration of appropriate approaches and paradigms while elaborating and implementing response mechanisms. This volume is relevant to researchers/experts, students, practitioners, and decision-makers from different scales and spheres.
