Do you know the difference between "hot" and "spicy"?
"Spicy" originally just meant that a food has lots of flavor from spices (cumin, cloves, curry powder, black pepper, allspice, etc.).
"Hot" means that it produces a burning sensation.🌶️🥵 Hot ingredients include chili peppers, mustard, horseradish, ginger, wasabi, and garlic.
Although this difference exists, when we say "spicy", we almost always mean that something is "hot"🌶️✅, not that it has a lot of spices.
Examples using "spicy" to mean "hot"
-These chili peppers are very spicy.
-Thai people tend to eat spicy food.
-Cold beer goes well with spicy food.
Using "hot" in these situations is also often less clear because "hot" can also describe temperature.
Because of this, when someone uses the word "hot", we sometimes have to ask, "Do you mean hot hot or spicy hot?"
However, the bottled sauce made from chili peppers and vinegar is always called "hot sauce", not "spicy sauce".😅
