To "read between the lines" means to find a hidden meaning that isn't explicitly stated.
When you do this, you are looking for the subtext, clues, or the true intention behind someone's words or actions. It’s about understanding the "unspoken" part of a conversation.
How It Works in Practice
Think of it as a form of social or literary detective work. Here are a few ways it manifests:
In Conversation: If you ask a friend how they are and they sigh deeply before saying, "I'm fine," reading between the lines tells you they are actually stressed or upset, despite what they said.
In Writing: An author might describe a room as "cold and sterile" to suggest a character is lonely or emotionally distant, without ever using those specific words.
In Business: If a boss says, "We're moving in a different direction with this project," reading between the lines might suggest that your current work isn't meeting expectations.
Why We Use This Phrase
The metaphor comes from the idea of looking at the white space between printed lines of text to see if there is "invisible ink" or a deeper message that the writer didn't want to put in plain sight.
The Key Takeaway: It is the art of picking up on tone, body language, and context rather than just taking things at face value.
