LA 185.
Lizums is a striking example of how a Latvian rural centre can evolve over centuries while maintaining continuity with its historic spatial structure and identity. The historic centre, park and avenue remain the focus of public life, while new interventions – the renovated stadium, a walking park with a timber open-air stage, landscape and art installations, and the contemporary Avoti timber office building – add new layers to the inherited environment. Local residents, businesses and the municipality play an important role in shaping and maintaining these spaces. Lizums thus demonstrates continuity in practice: its identity is not preserved as something static, but continually renewed by reusing inherited structures and adapting them to contemporary needs.
