Meet our artist-in-residence Alasdair Asmussen Doyle from Australia.
Alasdair: I’m an artist and filmmaker working primarily with analogue film and installation. Over the last few years, my work has explored the relationship between film and animals, often focusing on migratory and displaced. While in Riga, I’m continuing this research, with a particular focus on the presence of animals in early cinema, and the transition from the still to the moving image.
🎥Describe your creative process in three words: Wandering, mapping, translating.
🎥Name one exciting thing about being here in Riga, in BAL residency: To be in a city with a rich history of cinema and experimental film, and the birthplace of Sergei Eisenstein.
‘Now why should the cinema follow the forms of theater and painting rather than the methodology of language, which allows wholly new concepts of ideas to arise from the combination of two concrete denotations of two concrete objects?’ - Eisenstein.

Meet our artist-in-residence Tianjiao Wang from China!
Tianjiao: I primarily work with 16mm color film. My current project was initiated by a group of seagulls migrating from Siberia to Yunnan in China for the winter. I have been curious about flying and migration as acts, and when I eventually traveled to Yunnan, it felt as if the seagulls were guiding me to look more closely at the textures of this region. At BAL, I will begin working with the already shot images through printing and processes of reimagining them.
🪽Name one exciting thing about being here in Riga, in BAL residency: I look forward to being guided by the freshness of new techniques while not being misled by such stimulation.
