On 20 January, Latvia celebrates Barricade Remembrance Day. It is a day when we commemorate and remember the events of January 1991 and the defence measures of the restored Latvian state on 4 May 1990, which took place in Riga and other Latvian cities.
In Riga, the disturbing events began in the first days of January 1991, when OMON (otrjad miļicii ossobovo naznačenija; special task militia units) occupied the Press House to stop the publication of newspapers that supported independence of Latvia.
On the morning of 13 January 1991, after the bloody events in Lithuania – the attack of the USSR army on the defenders of the Vilnius television tower, more than 500,000 Latvian residents gathered in Riga, Daugavmala, in a protest demonstration, responding to the call of the Popular Front of Latvia (PFL), to express support for the Lithuanians and their readiness to defend the restored state of Latvia. The PFL board called on the people to gather at Dome Square to protect the most important objects – the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia (now the Saeima), the Council of Ministers (now the Cabinet of Ministers), the Latvian Radio building at Dome Square, the Telephone and Telegraph Exchange on Dzirnavu Street, the Radio and Television Centre in Zaķusala, bridges, etc. And in a short time, Riga became a city of barricades – heavy agricultural and construction equipment, trucks with logs and concrete blocks arrived in Riga from all over Latvia.
It was a time of anxiety for RTU staff and students, especially PFL activists. The students had a session – tests and exams took place as planned in the first half of the day, but after that, most of the faculty staff and students went on duty at the designated places behind the barricades.
The participation of RTU employees at various Riga facilities was coordinated by the central headquarters, which was located in a building at 1a Kaļķu Street. In order to ensure communications between the RTU management and administration with other institutions and organizations in case of need, someone was constantly at the telephone (mobile phones did not exist at that time) in the rector’s office – during the day, the Rector (1985–1999) Egons Lavendelis (1934–2023) was on duty, while at night (after official working hours until the morning of the next day) alternately – the Vice-Rector for Science (1987–1999) Ivars Knēts (1938–2019) and the Vice-Rector for Public Affairs (1990–1995) Juris Briedis (1936–2016).
For their active participation during the barricades, many RTU employees and students were awarded the «Memorial Badge of the 1991 Barricade Participant».
The stormy atmosphere of the barricade days is vividly described in his memoirs by Arvīds Kanbergs (1934–2025), a long-time member of the RTU male choir «Gaudeamus» and one of the founders of the choir, who passed away at the end of last year: «..Due to the bloody events in Vilnius, in the early morning hours of 13 January 1991, conductor Edgars Račevskis (1936–2022) gathered the choristers at Dome Square, and later at a demonstration on Daugavmala. ..During the days of the barricades, the gathering place for Riga choirs was the home of the male choir «Tēvzeme» – a basement in Jauniela. From there, in the late evening and night hours, our choirs went to various protected objects and, with popular melodies, cheered up the people at the barricade bonfires. These songs were very much anticipated and necessary because, when the choir left, the question always came up: «When will you come again?» ..All the nights during the barricades always ended at six in the morning with «God, bless Latvia» and a couple of songs near the Supreme Council building».
