Our students visited the Daugavpils Administration of the State Border Guard. It was a highly informative session focused on the security of the EU and NATO borders and current challenges the Border Guard is facing in the region. The visit provided our students a truly unique experience and gave them deep insights into border security and international safety.

Learn Russian in the EU had the honor of hosting our alumna Jennifer Uhler for a guest lecture that bridged the gap between the classroom and the world of international diplomacy.

Jennifer, now serving as a Regional English Language Officer at the U.S. Embassy Riga (Moscow Engagement Support Office), shared her wealth of experience with our current cohort of American and British students on a Russian semester abroad program in Daugavpils. Beyond the logistics of her role in numerous countries, she touched on the importance of understanding foreign languages and cultures in today's world.

A huge thank you to Jennifer for such an engaging and enjoyable session. It’s always a proud moment to see our alumni making a global impact!

We look forward to welcoming Jennifer back to Daugavpils in the future

Nikolai Lossky in History of Russian Philosophy
14–15 May 2026

Krakow Meetings on Russian Philosophy
- Faculty of Philosophy, Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow (Poland)
- Daugavpils University (Latvia)
- Learn Russian in the European Union (Latvia)

On 14–15 May 2026, the Krakow Meetings on Russian Philosophy, Daugavpils University, and Learn Russian in the European Union will sponsor a conference on Nikolai Lossky (1870–1965) and Russian Philosophy. The conference will be held at the Daugavpils University, Latvia.

Nikolai Lossky (1870–1965) was one of the first Russian religious philosophers to gain worldwide fame. Already in the 1910s his books were translated and published in England. He was born in Kraslava in the territory of the former Russian Empire (now Latvia). In 1922 he emigrated on a “philosophical steamship” first to Prague, then to France and to the USA. He taught in Prague, Bratislava, Paris, and New York. In 1933 he was a visiting professor at Stanford University.

Nikolay Lossky developed an original philosophical system of ideal-realism, which he himself considered a development of the monadology of G.W. Leibniz. During his lecture tour to Warsaw, he was presented as one of the most outstanding followers of intuitionism, on a par with Henri Bergson. Lossky was also the author of The History of Russian Philosophy, which was first published in New York in 1951, was translated into French by his son, the famous Russian theologian Vladimir Lossky (1903–1958), and then into other languages.

During the conference we want to delve into the biography and philosophy of Nikolai Lossky, and to better understand what makes him original and relevant. There will also be an excursion to Lossky’s hometown, Kraslava.

What a month it’s been for our semester students here in Daugavpils! 🤩
From music and film to art and sports, there was no shortage of things to do in Daugavpils this September. Our students enjoyed a symphonic orchestra concert, the lively Rīgas Street Festival, and the international Manhattan Short Film Festival.
A special highlight was attending an open lecture by Kate Rothko Prizel, daughter of the world-renowned artist Mark Rothko — and we were thrilled that she agreed to join our group photo!
To top it off, some of our students even took part in the traditional Mežciems Run, embracing the local spirit and community energy.
Daugavpils always offers something exciting — from cultural events to local traditions — making it easy for our students to explore, connect, and feel at home while studying here.
