We are thrilled to invite you to join the public presentations of Ljuzem Madiljin and Baru Madiljin on Saturday, 24th Feb. at 16:00 in Montemor-o-Novo.
Ljuzem’s Walk in Montemor-o-Novo (2024)
‘Montemor’ in Portuguese means the biggest hill; ‘Timur’ in Paiwan language means a place where the heart yearns for.
Born and raised in the Timur tribal community in Pingtung, Ljuzem Madiljin has spent ten years on her walking project, Ljuzem’s Walk, that is her therapeutic trek aimed at finding herself as well as a path of self-cultivation for all who desire something in life.
The 2-week residency at O Espaço do Tempo is Ljuzem’s first residency in life as well as her first time visiting Portugal. During her research in Montemor-o-Novo, Ljuzem walks everyday through the city, between the temporary resident place, theaters and discovers those hidden stories in corners of the city as well as the unseen beauty in the daily path. At the end of her residency, Ljuzem invites people to walk with her from the place where her heart yearns for to (re)discover the moments of dialogue and of self-caring.
‘Each step is progress in rebuilding myself and a bit of self-therapy, and each walk is a way to rediscover my past, embrace my present, and see my future.’ by Ljuzem Madiljin

Baru Madiljin《Uqaljai • 蛾 • Moth》(2024)
Taiwan x Portugal | 2024 | 5 mins
Moth to flame? Is it suffering or love?
Is it a cocoon to bind oneself, or is it a cocoon for self-protection?
In Paiwan language, the word ‘Uqaljai’ means man/male. Born and raised in the Timur tribal community in Pingtung, Baru Madiljin has been researching the awareness and cultural conflict of gender identity in contemporary indigenous communities since the beginning of his career as choreographer and dance artist. The 2-week residency at O Espaço do Tempo is Baru’s first residency in life as well as his first time visiting Portugal.
During his stay in Montemor-o-Novo, Baru immerses himself in an unfamiliar environment, where he is unfamiliar with local spoken language. While attempting to find a connection between the body and the Paiwan nose flute that he is unfamiliar with, he will listen attentively to how the body and sound are connected. The nose flute that he has been researching is a typical Paiwan music instrument since ancient times. In the context of Paiwan traditional music compositions, the sound of the nose flute can be interpreted as male role or female role. Baru extends it as a metaphor for having female and male identities at the same time in one body.
At the end of his residency, Baru strongly feels, here at Espaco do Tempo, is a safe space and right place for creation to share his research about the complexity of the reality of indigenous LGBTQI+ community in current tribal communities in Taiwan. He invites participants to be his guests visiting his temporary apartment in Magina, where he presents his short film,《Uqaljai • 蛾 • Moth》in the living room, a cozy and intimate space for dialogue and getting a close understanding about contemporary indigenous identity in the Paiwan community.

Check out behind the scenes of bulabulay mun?: What you will experience during the entire show is 100% made by ourselves and by the Paiwan people of Timur village. Through the of our elders, we went to the forest, where Paiwan people are familiar with over decades and having dialogue with the Mother Nature, with her we learned how to identify the spirit of wood that plays an important role about , and in the story of bulabulay mun?. With the joint forces of the Nature and the Paiwan people, the trunk of the tree is transformed into the soul of the scenography! This trunk has become the highly handcrafted wooden stick made by the 80-year-old senior hunter and hand-crafter, vuvu DU Lan-Bao. Vuvu has been accompanying 蒂摩爾古薪舞集 Tjimur Dance Theatre since the early stages of the company and generously sharing his wisdom and deep knowledge about the traditions and the tribal customs of Paiwan to connect the past with the present.
