María Fernanda del Barco grew up watching her father cultivate plantains on Costa Rica’s 🇨🇷 Caribbean coast. But from an early age, she was drawn to something else entirely - science, technology, and eventually, space.

Today, at just 27, she has co-founded a space 🚀 company, flown an experiment on a suborbital rocket, and been recognised by the International Astronautical Federation and Forbes.

Maria is now halfway through the Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Luxembourg, learning the one thing her mechatronics engineering degree never taught her: how to turn technical ideas into a business.

Starting university in a new city, sometimes in a new country, is a big step. Welcome Week exists so that nobody takes it alone.

From Tuesday 8 to Friday 11 September, our new students get to know Belval Campus: mornings that begin with breakfast together at the Maison du Savoir, a workshop on studying in the age of AI, an afternoon around the Climate Fresk, sport out on the Esplanade, and above all, time to meet the people they will spend the next years with.

On Friday comes . The Rector opens the academic year, faculties and student associations fill the floors of the Maison du Savoir, and food trucks line the Esplanade for a first lunch as part of the university.

Invitations arrive by email to our new students. The programme and answers to the most common questions are at welcomeweek.uni.lu

When Thomas arrived at the University of Luxembourg as an Erasmus exchange student, he expected to stay for just one semester. Instead, he returned for a full Master's degree in Finance and Economics.

This September, he leaves again ✈️ - this time to the University of Montreal through the Global Exchange programme, his third university in a third country.

Thomas shares why going abroad can be one of the most rewarding decisions students make.

How do you turn a university project into a start-up? 🤔

Master in Entrepreneurship and Innovation alumnus Amine Khobba did exactly that. He built Coacheey, an all-in-one platform connecting sports 🏋️ and wellness coaches with clients. The idea emerged while he was still studying, and his Master's programme helped him develop it into a business.

Today, Coacheey is based at the University of Luxembourg Incubator and has partnered with the American Chamber of Commerce to bring coaching into its wellness programmes.

We spoke with Amine about his journey from idea to start-up, and the advice he would give aspiring entrepreneurs.

Congratulations to our Doctoral Researcher and elite athlete Yves Wehmer on an outstanding performance at the ICF Wildwater Canoeing World Championships 🏆.

Competing against the world’s best 🚣‍♂️, Yves reached the Sprint Final and secured a 12th-place finish, marking a strong result for Luxembourg 🇱🇺 on the international stage. This achievement comes as he balances sport competition with presenting two years of doctoral research at an international conference.

We wish Yves every success in the upcoming World Cup Series, which spans three venues and begins in Hungary 🇭🇺 this month.

Can sustainability sell? 🧐

That’s the question driving our student Yuri Lan’s master’s thesis research - and it just earned him one of the first Look Up Now – in memoriam of Laure Belin research grants. 🎉

Yuri's research focuses on consumer willingness to pay for sustainable products - examining which features consumers value and how much more they are willing to pay for them.

Congratulations to Yuri and fellow grant recipient Yama Shan Ki Lau, a student in the Master in Geography and Spatial Planning. 👏

Special thanks to Véronique Degbomont and Look Up Now for supporting meaningful student-led research.
