“I was never good at math either.”

As parents, we often say this.
It sounds harmless, even comforting.
But what if it does the opposite?

Over the past 11 years of tutoring, I’ve worked with students from Miami to Luxembourg.
And I hear it from my students all the time.

“I am not good at math.”

When I ask where that belief came from…
They always remember the moment:
📌 “A moment they got stuck and didn’t get help.”
📌 “A teacher who made them feel small.”
📌 “A parent who accidentally confirmed the fear.”

The truth?
No one is born bad at math.
They just didn’t get the right support at the right time, and gave up.

So if you’ve ever said to your child “I wasn’t good at math either”…
Try this instead:
✅ “It’s ok to find it hard right now, you learn step by step. It’s a process.”
✅ “You’re trying and learning, don’t give up!”
✅ “Let’s figure this out together.”

đź’¬ Confidence starts with what our kids hear.
Let’s give them a voice in their head that helps, not holds them back.

✨ Parent win of the week:

Your child struggled less with math.
Maybe they got one extra question right.

Maybe they didn’t get frustrated over the homework.

Maybe they said “This actually makes sense.”
These are not small things.

These are major steps.
Confidence is not always just straight A’s.

Sometimes, it looks like trying again.
👏🏼 If that happened in your house this week, celebrate it!

Your child is on the right track, you are doing great.

Hi! 👋🏻 I’m Claudia Alvarez, founder of Math Wise Tutoring & Test Prep.

I’ve always liked numbers, but today, my focus is on something more impactful: helping students navigate the ISEE prep process with clarity and confidence.

My journey began when I prepared my own daughters for the ISEE as they applied to Ransom Everglades, one of Miami’s most competitive schools. Word spread out and soon I started also supporting students struggling with Math, too.

My expat experience allowed me to support families from Miami to Luxembourg, Geneva, Singapore and Mexico City.

Here, I’ll be sharing:
🎯 Effective study tips
🧠 Mindset strategies
📚 Tools to make learning, especially Math, more approachable

If you are a parent seeking guidance or have questions about the ISEE, feel free to reach out, I would love to connect.
