I am deeply grateful, for it seems that in life I have been blessed to receive twice the birthday wishes that most people receive, having people recognize both my lunar and solar birthdays.

When I was young, my birthdays were extravagant affairs, hundreds gathered to celebrate late into the night. Yet as the years have passed, the gatherings have grown smaller while the responsibilities upon my shoulders have grown ever greater.

Though I sincerely appreciate every birthday message from my students, I cannot deny the burden I carry. Each year I ask myself how I can lead better, teach better, and serve better so that my students may flourish and reach their fullest potential.

I do not have a family of my own, nor children by blood. Yet Hwa Rang Do and its people have truly become my family.

I share in your joys and triumphs. I feel your struggles and sorrows. I counsel many of you through marriage, parenthood, and life’s hardships. During holidays, it is often my Hwa Rang Do family that comes to greet me. Though I live far from my own relatives and have no family of my own here, wherever there are Hwa Rang Do practitioners, I am home.

You are all my children.

And until my final breath, I will continue striving to better myself so that I may offer greater guidance, wisdom, and service to all of you.

As our Lord Jesus Christ taught:

“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4)

Every one of you has value and meaning to me. I do not wish to lose a single member of my flock. Yet our fallen human nature, the ancient sin of pride infects us all, tempting us to enthrone ourselves as kings over our own small domains while remaining blind to the Truth.

But no one can be forced to know the Truth. It is a path each soul must ultimately walk alone.

So once again, I thank you all for your well wishes.

I gladly carry the burden of being your teacher, your guide, and above all, an exemplar of discipline. It is often an unappreciated role and at times a lonely one, but it is my sacrifice to you and my offering to God.

Therefore, I carry it with gladness, with joy, and with hope to live another year; to carry my cross, the cross of Hwa Rang Do, without delusion, without compromise, and without alteration; striving always to preserve its purity and remain steadfast to the Way of the Hwarang—not because it is easy, but because it is aligned with the Truth.

Thank you for being my family.
