IKL offers workshops aimed at children of childcare and educational facilities in Luxembourg on topics like plural identities, racism, migrations, language awareness, critical thinking and a peaceful living together in our society. Ikl stands for interkulturell (Luxembourgish for intercultural) and is a joint department of the Ministry of Education, the local NGO Association de Soutien aux Travail
leurs Immigrés a.s.b.l. The department was founded in 1988 by the name of CDAIC, which stands for Centre de Documentation et d’Animations Interculturelles. Since the beginning, the mission has been to promote a peaceful living together in Luxembourg and to inform the population on why the Luxembourgish society has become so multicultural. This has been done by workshops in primary and secondary schools on various subjects like: migrations from and to Luxembourg, refugees, human rights, stereotypes, intercultural competence, religions, languages, etc. Furthermore, the department managed a library with a large selection of books and other media on these topics, where teachers and everyone interested could find information and interesting teaching material. Unfortunately ikl had to stop this activity due to various reasons. Beside the workshops and the library, ikl has carried out several multi-year projects with funding from the European Union to sensitise primary and secondary school students to migrations and their multiple impacts, and to promote a peaceful living together in Luxembourg. Moreover, ikl has always created teaching material like books, brochures, CD-Rom, websites, exhibitions, etc. for pedagogical purposes, and has started working with groups of adults to inform them on the history of Luxembourg, especially regarding the evolution and challenges of this multicultural society, and to discuss the impact of this situation on their respective fields of activity. Today, after almost 30 years of existence and a change of name from CDAIC to ikl, the fight for the same cause still continues with a lot of energy but with a lot more experience as well!
