I believe that experiences are the best way to learn about writing. I can teach a kid about form and technique but I cannot teach a kid about the smell of cedar. I cannot articulate the aversion I have to the smell of soy milk because of a memory it evokes. I cannot explain the fear that comes with having your hood up on an empty street and no peripheral vision.
Classes can only work if a kid is constantly fed experiences, regardless of how meaningless they may seem.
Better still, don't send your kid for a class but spend that time communicating with them about how they feel.
