Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain Paid a Visit to the VU LSC!
At VU LSC, Ms González Laya met with the director Prof. Gintaras Valinčius who told her about the history of the Center, which has many examples of research cooperation with Spain. The minister was also shown the laboratory, where she met Dr Aurelijus Burokas, who had worked in Spain for a number of years.
The Minister, in turn, also welcomed the opportunity to visit the LSC and praised the cooperation between Lithuanian and Spanish scientists.

Prof. V. Šikšnys Elected the New Chairman of the LSC Council
On 28 January 2021, the newly elected VU LSC Council met in the first meeting.
Prof. V. Šikšnys was re-elected Chairman of the Council. He also chaired the LSC Council last term of office.
Dr Daiva Baltriukienė was elected Vice-chairperson during the meeting.

On 12 January, a message was received that the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) had awarded a substantial grant to the researcher of Warwick University Dr. Algirdas Toleikis.
It is the first grant of this sort for a Lithuanian researcher. According to the young scientist Dr. A. Toleikis, this support opens up the way for him to return to Lithuania and gives the opportunity to establish a new research laboratory in his native country, at the Life Sciences Center of Vilnius University.

VU students repeat the success story by becoming the best team of this year’s iGEM competition!
Lithuania made news at the largest international competition of synthetic biology iGEM held on 13-22 November. The Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM team, which has been participating in this prestigious competition for six years, won the grand prize of the competition and became the best iGEM team in the world in 2020.
VU students (most of them from the VU Life Sciences Center) outdid more than 250 of the world’s strongest university teams. VU students won gold medals and were nominated in eight additional prize categories, including winners in two, the Best Project in the Field of Environmental Protection among them.
