A Little About Learning and Us…
If someone can become fluent (!) in Japanese or Chinese within three months, how long would it take for you to learn English? Drawing from our personal experiences, allow me to share a couple (pun intended) of examples.
I began from scratch (despite studying German at school and university), and within three months, I was able to have a meaningful discussion with a professor from the USA about the influence of electromagnetic fields on the human body. It was during my first engineering job at a Laser Surgery laboratory. And yes, I still managed to dedicate several hours each day to learning English. But do not expect results if you do not dedicate at least 15 minutes a day. 😄
Now, let’s talk about my wife. She won a competition to become a translator on live TV (Travel Channel on Mikrovisata TV) after only several months of preparation. Her starting point was very average English, having studied Linguistics at Moscow Lomonosov University during the Soviet era. Fast forward a couple of years: we both ran a language school, had ten teachers, and collectively taught 1500 academic hours per student per week. Our dream? Teaching English (EFL) in London.
And we did it. A few more years down the road, my wife became a registered interpreter for UK courts. Our cultural roots were deeply entwined with London for two decades. We believe this experience gives us an edge over native Lithuanians who—especially—still teach English with strict grammatical precision.
Our children swiftly became proficient in English, forcing us to converse and even think in English. But now, six years already passes when we are back in Lithuania. My wife continues to teach English. Not many can boast 30 years of experience and still exude the energy of a 30-year-old? 😊
Great number of participants including two groups of students from Lithuanian Ministry of Economics and Innovation, National Health Service, other public organizations and businesses were happy with the unique experience.
Despite not actively participating in teaching at the moment, I still supply and challenge my wife, Jūratė, with effective teaching and learning methods. And now, I want to share a revelation—an affirmation that our success wasn’t merely due to innate talent. Instead, it was a secret we unknowingly cultivated.
