“Jeeez it’s just getting harder and harder “

It is one way to look at it ..
Of course every journey of learning is different. We all need time, attention, patience and action focused on the things we want to learn - no doubt about that.
However, have you ever considered looking at the power of knowing what questions to ask from a different perspective?

Let’s explore.

When we start learning anything new - EVERYTHING in that project may feel or actually be new to us. There are tons of questions in our heads, and we don’t even know where to begin, what to ask or what to focus on first.

Lucky are those who have a devoted and qualified teacher guiding them.

Those who push through the beginning, or luckily enjoy the process of building the foundation, eventually reach the moment when they recognize the structures they have been learning for a while, and therefore they are able to notice the new ones as well.

The other day, after one of my students asked: “why do we have an auxiliary in an affirmative sentence?” I lit up.

Even though the following comment from another student in the class was completely understandable “jeeeez…. It’s just getting harder and harder…”
I knew I was looking at the situation from a completely different perspective.

I think I noticed a remarkable thing about learning that many of us may easily miss…
My students already know so much that they can recognize what is familiar to them and what isn’t. Because of that they know what seems different and that helps them ask the right questions, making learning actually work in their favour.

How great is that?

So I wonder, which student are you ?

The one who sees something new as a challenge to conquer? Or do you allow yourself to feel a sense of accomplishment, knowing that noticing something new is only possible because you’ve already learned so much?

„Jėėėzau… Darosi vis sunkiau ir sunkiau.“

Tai tik vienas iš būdų kaip galime žvelgti į progresą.

Žinoma, kiekvieno mokymosi kelionė yra skirtinga. Visiems mums reikia laiko, dėmesio, kantrybės ir atitinkamų pastangų, nukreiptų į tai, ko norime išmokti. Dėl to abejonių nėra.

Tačiau ar kada nors pagalvojote, kad į gebėjimą užduoti tinkamus klausimus galima žvelgti iš visai kitos perspektyvos?

Kai pradedame mokytis kažko naujo, gali būti, kad VISKAS tame procese mums yra nauja. Galvoje sukasi daugybė klausimų, nežinome nuo ko pradėti, ko klausti ar į ką pirmiausia sutelkti dėmesį.

Pasiseka tiems, kurie turi atsidavusį ir kompetentingą mokytoją, galintį juos vesti šiuo keliu.

Tie, kurie įveikia pradžią, o galbūt mėgaujasi pačiu pagrindų kūrimo procesu, anksčiau ar vėliau pasiekia etapą, kuomet atpažįsta anksčiau išmoktas struktūras, ir būtent todėl jie gali pastebėti ir tai, kas nauja.

Praėjusią dieną vienas mano mokinių paklausė:

„Kodėl teigiamame sakinyje naudojame pagalbinį veiksmažodį?“

Nudžiugau.

Nors kito mokinio reakcija buvo visiškai suprantama:

„Jėėėzau… Darosi vis sunkiau ir sunkiau…“

Aš į šią situaciją žiūrėjau visiškai kitaip.

Pastebėjau– tai, ką daugelis iš mūsų lengvai praleidžiame.

Mano mokiniai jau žino tiek daug, kad gali atskirti, kas jiems pažįstama, ir kas – ne. Ir būtent tai jiems padeda užduoti tinkamus klausimus. O tada mokymasis ima veikti jų naudai.

Argi ne nuostabu?

O koks mokinys esate JŪS?

Tas, kuris kiekvieną naują dalyką priima kaip iššūkį, kurį reikia įveikti? O gal leidžiate sau pasidžiaugti tuo, kiek jau išmokote, suprasdami, kad pastebėti kažką naujo galite tik todėl, jog jau sukaupėte žinių?

Prisiminkime tokiais momentais sustoti ir įvertinti, kokį didelį kelią jau nuėjote.

Some thoughts…

Mokymasis per nepatogumą, nėra būtinas…
…tačiau tikėtinas.
Bent jau man.
Manau, čia svarbu pasakyti — mes visi tai esame patyrę.

Skirkime laiko apie tai susimąstyti.

Gali būti gana sunku iš karto įsiminti kažką naujo. Tačiau tai visiškai įmanoma per stiprią patirtį. Nesvarbu, ar ji džiaugsminga, traumuojanti, ar gėdinga - jei ji turi stiprų emocinį intensyvumą- ją sunku pamiršti.

Aš pati turiu daug tokių patirčių. Prisimenu, kuomet pasakiau „bum“ vietoje „bump“, neteisingai ištariau „procedure“, todėl žmonės išgirdo „prostitute“, arba linkčiojau galva, kuomet kažkas paklausė, ar turiu kokią nors negalią (buvo pernelyg gėda pripažinti, kad nesuprantu). Daugelis kitų prisiminimų buvo laimei „užblokuoti“ atminties, ko gero tam, kad galėčiau judėti į priekį su savo gyvenimu 🙂

Ar buvo gėda? Labai. Bet ar tai buvo veiksminga? Be jokios abejonės.

Todėl prašau nepamirškime jog kiekvienas akcentas, kiekvienas nesusikalbėjimas, kiekviena klaida yra kiekvieno mūsų deklaracija, jog MOKAME DAUGIAU NEI VIENĄ KALBĄ. Nepaisant formato kuriuo mokotės ar disciplinos kurią mokotės— nesustokite kai pasijusite nepatogiai, pabandykite tai priimti kaip greitesnį mokymosi būdą.

Learning through embarrassment is not necessary…
…but it’s likely. At least for me.
I guess this is where I want you to know — we’ve all been there 🙂

Let’s explore.

It can be quite difficult to remember something new right away. However, it is very possible to do so through an intense experience. No matter whether it’s joyful, traumatic, or embarrassing — as long as it carries a strong emotional intensity, it becomes difficult to forget.

I personally have many of those. To name a few, I remember saying “bum” instead of “bump,” mispronouncing “procedure” so people mistakenly heard “prostitute,” or nodding along when someone asked if I had any disability (simply because I was too embarrassed to ask what that meant). Many others have been blocked from my conscious memory so I could move on with my life 🙂

Was it embarrassing?
Extremely.
Was it effective?
Without a doubt.

Therefore, every accent, every miscommunication, every mistake is a declaration that YOU KNOW MORE THAN ONE LANGUAGE.
Even so, no matter the format or the subject — KEEP GOING!
Next time you feel embarrassed, try seeing it as a faster way of learning.

Nuomonės svarba

Beveik kiekvienoje pamokoje prašau savo mokinių apmąstyti tam tikrą temą ar idėją ir pasidalinti savo nuomone apie ją.

Kartais jaučiu, kad mokiniai linkę dvejoti, tarsi jų nuomonė nebūtų svarbi. Kartais jie parengia rašinį, tačiau pastebiu, kad prieš jį skaitydami jie delsia, lyg manydami, kad mokytojui ar bendraklasiams tai gali pasirodyti nuobodu ar nereikšminga.
Kartais net pasigirsta komentaras: „...nenoriu švaistyti pamokos laiko…“

Todėl skirkime akimirką apie tai susimąstyti.

Ar tik man taip atrodo, ar iš tiesų yra daugiau žmonių, kurie mano, kad nebeturime prabangos skirti laiko „vidutiniškoms“ temoms?
Neduok Dieve, švaistyti laiką!
Šiandien gyvenimas yra kur kas sudėtingesnis ir užimtesnis, pilnas „tikrų“ problemų, kurias reikia spręsti, ir reikalų, kuriais reikia rūpintis. Galbūt…

Tačiau ar mes nenusipelnome skirti laiko mąstymui ir savo požiūriui, kad ir koks nereikšmingas jis atrodytų? Kada dar tai daryti, jei ne mokantis kalbos ir būdų išreikšti savo mintis? Kaip kitaip išmoksime apskritai ką nors aptarti?

Mokytojavimas mane išmokė, kad nepaisant nereikšmingų temų, užimto gyvenimo ir greitėjančio pasaulio tempo, mes galime pamiršti, kiek daug pasikeitėme. Jei nėra laiko kalbėtis net apie pačius nereikšmingiausius įsitikinimus ar savo gyvenimo aspektus, kaip sužinosime, kokie esame dabar?

Mes niekada nesame statiški; nuolat judame ir keičiamės, esam linkę tikėti savo „tiesomis“, kurios neišvengiamai formuoja mūsų santykį su pasauliu. Todėl aš kviečiu jus stabtelti ir pasitikrinti su savimi: ar tai vis dar yra tai, už ką aš stoviu? Kada paskutinį kartą į šį klausimą atsakete jūs? Galbūt jau nebesate tie, kuo manėte esą?

Anglų kalbos pamoka gali būti erdvė ne tik mokytis kalbos, bet ir iš naujo atrasti save bei suvokti, kiek daug esame pasikeitę.

The importance of opinion

In almost every lesson I ask my students to reflect on a topic or idea and share their views on the matter.
Sometimes, I sense that students tend to hesitate as if their opinion may not matter. On some occasions,they prepare a written opinion essay, and I notice they linger before reading it all as if a teacher or classmates may find it boring or insignificant to listen to.
Sometimes, the comment “…don’t want to waste lesson time” comes out …
Therefore, let’s spare a moment to reflect on that.

Is it just me or are there more people who actually believe that we no longer have the luxury of time to spend on mediocre topics?
God forbid we waste time! Today, life is far more complex and busy with the “real” problems to solve and matters to take care of. Perhaps...

However, don’t we deserve to dedicate time to thinking and be able to reflect on the views we hold, no matter how trivial they may seem. When else can we so if not while learning the language, and the ways to express our thoughts? How else are we going to learn to discuss anything?

What teaching has taught me, is that despite insignificant topics, busy life, and faster pace of the world, we may forget how much we have changed. If there is no time to converse even about the most insignificant aspects of our lives or beliefs how will we learn what we are like now?

We are never static; we are always in motion and in the process of change and we tend to believe our truths that inevitably shape us in relation to the world, which reflects on other beings, influencing each other and asking to check in with ourselves: is this still what I stand for? When was the las time you checked ? Perhaps you’re no longer who you believed you were?

What I have learnt is that an English lesson may be a platform for anyone not only to learn the language but also to rediscover oneself and how much one has grown and evolved. Would you be curious to relearn who you are in English?
