Our preschoolers wrapped up Insect Week by cutting, pasting, and making their own paper bees. Tiny hands, big creativity, and lots of learning about why bees matter! 💛🖤

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF EDUCATION:

INSPIRING FUTURE LEADERS AND BRIDGING THE EDUCATION GAP

Education shapes the future of nations. It empowers individuals to dream bigger, better, and become movers and shakers in different areas of life. This year’s theme, “The power of Youth in Co-creating Education,” celebrates the important role young people play in creating inclusive, high-quality education and promoting peaceful, just, and sustainable communities.

Today, we accentuate the journey of Ms. Nthabeleng Dori Pitse Mthimkulu, the 31-year-old visionary co-founder of Academ-iQ Multinational School, which serves both pre-school and primary learners. Raised in ’Mate, Leribe, her educational journey began at Villa Crux Primary School and St. Phillips High School, followed by a Diploma in Primary Education from the Lesotho College of Education. She is currently pursuing a Business Administration degree at the University of the People.

Her path into education leadership was shaped by her training and experience at Soofia International School and as a senior teacher at Floating Zoo School. These experiences inspired her to create a learning environment where learner centered teaching methods, technology and traditional learning work hand in hand. This vision led to the establishment of Academ-iQ in March 2023. What began as a dream has since grown into reality, with two campuses established within three years.

WW: Please tell us a bit about Academ-iQ Multinational School.

NP: Academ-iQ is an international school offering affordable, inclusive education for pre-school and primary learners. Our Preschool is registered with the Ministry of Education, and Primary registration is in progress. Upon completion, we will transition from the local curriculum to Cambridge. We currently offer Computing, Robotics, Science, Mathematics, English (with Phonics as a separate subject), and Art & Design, where learners develop practical skills such as soap, candle making, bag, and hat making.

WW: As a young educator or leader, what has brought you the most joy?

NP: The moment the student's eyes light up with the understanding of the concept I am teaching, that's what makes me happy. The joy and recognition ignite something in me. Also, when our students in primary leave for high school. The fact that we have seen them grow from a young tender age till they reach that stage.

WW: How do you define inclusive and equitable education?

NP: Inclusive and equitable education means all students receive the same quality education, regardless of their backgrounds, parents’ financial status, or students' inability to learn at the same pace as others. This means that we offer the same support, or more, depending on the needs of a student, without compromising the support of others. Academ-iQ was born for this reason: to provide affordable, quality education.

WW: What obstacles have you encountered in your role as an educator?

NP: The main challenge is the lack of teaching and learning resources, which limits students’ ability to practice at home. The Covid-19 pandemic also created learning gaps as learners progressed without adequate assessment. Some teachers still struggle with technology and require further support. On a personal level I struggled with overworking. Fortunately, I learned through CAFI’s Incubation support to delegate, realizing that a business should not depend solely on its owner, an adjustment that has improved both my work and personal life.

WW: What challenges persist in the education system today?

NP: The biggest challenge in education is not introducing technology to students early. Today’s world needs tech-savvy people, and our schools should reflect that. Teachers also need better training to identify and support children with special needs. Additionally, every school should have a psychologist to help address the mental, emotional, and physical challenges faced by both students and teachers.

WW: Lastly, what support do you need to be effective in educating young children?

NP: I find being a school principal challenging. Due to this, I find the need to strengthen my leadership and conflict resolution skills. For a better Academ-iQ, I need support in those areas. Although our school is making important changes, the speed and cost sometimes lead to parents withdrawing their children. I realize we need a more balanced approach to introducing changes to keep the families I initially aimed to serve.
