Episode 15
The three of them went into the kitchen and mixed up the pre-packaged brownies. Luffi vaguely remember how the accident happened. She turned on the oven and meant to put a match to it but was distracted. Then Joy said, "Here put this in," And as she put the brownie mix in, she saw there was no flame so she struck a match and leaned over. There was a terrific explosion and she felt herself being thrown back against the the steel kitchen table. Then there were screams and she was being lifted up and carried. Her eyes burned and her throat felt raw. But otherwise she seemed to be all right. Nevertheless Mrs Lukas rushed her to the hospital to be checked out, knowing that she was pregnant and fearing something might happened to her. The doctors examined her and wanted to give her a chest x-ray to make sure the explosion hadn't damaged her lungs. It was decided she should stay in the hospital overnight.
She was put in the far end of the pediatrics ward, in a room with four beds, all kids more or less her age. The doctor gave her something and she felt groggy and sort of slept right through dinner and mist of the evening. When she woke it was dark. Her roommates were all asleep. She was thirsty so she got out of bed and decided to look for a water fountain. She also had to go to the bathroom.
Stepping out of the bathroom moments later, she heard a kind of wailing, like a little kid crying. There was no one in the corridor and, curious, she followed the sound of the crying child. She stopped before half-opened door and peered in. A little boy, about four, was lying in a bed, one foot high in the air in traction, crying his little heart out. She couldn't help herself. She went in and stood by the bed.

Episode 14
The only thing she really knew for sure was that she couldn't murder her baby. She just couldn't have an abortion. The baby was part of her and would love her as she would love it. She wanted to take care of it and keep it with her always. She even had dreams of holding a little baby girl close to her, of watching her little fingers curl up around hers and knowing that she belonged to her. At least she would have one human being who loved her and needed her and wanted her, and that would be her baby. She couldn't imagine having a boy. She thought of her baby as a girl, an extension of her.
Joy and April and the rest were wonderful to her. They treated her like a queen. Every day they'd ask her how she felt and had she felt the baby move yet? Of course she hadn't. She was just entering her third month, according to the doctor. He said she would't feel life until the end of the third month.
She never thought about Carlos. It was as though he had ceased to exist. He had served his purpose. Her baby had nothing to do with him at all.
One afternoon when they got home from school. April and Joy decided to make brownies. They were allowed to use the kitchen if they cleaned up afterwards.

Episode 14
She walked out. That afternoon all the other girls knew she was pregnant. They crowded around wanting to know how she felt and what she was going to do. They made her feel important. Most of them said she was doing the right thing, that she had a right to keep her baby. They were her peers and they not only approved of her stand, they applauded it.
It was something to be pregnant and stand up to Mrs Lukas and say she was going to have her baby and keep it. The girls actually envied her! She glowed with the attention she was getting all through dinner. And she'd never felt better in her life. She wasn't sick to her stomach anymore. In fact, she was ravenous.
One of the girls passed her her dessert and said, "Since you're eating for two, you oughtta eat more."
She saw Dr Wilson and he confirmed that she was pregnant. He said she had to see him once a month until the her last two months of pregnancy, after which he'd see her more often. She told the girls everything the doctor had said. She even showed them the diet it he had prescribed for her.
A few days later Mrs Lukas called her to her office.
Mrs Lukas:"It might be better if you dropped out of school a semester and went back after the birth if the baby." (She looked worried.) "That is, you ought to go back to school. There'll be the baby's future _"
Luffi:"Don't worry about my baby," (She told her again.) "My mother will help me take care of it."
Mrs Lukas:"I was led to believe your mother didn't... that is, have you told your mother?"
Luffi:"No, but she'll come through." She said, not really believing herself but refusing to look that far ahead.

Episode 13
The next two days she refused to go to school. She said she wasn't feeling well. Mrs Lukas, who ran the girls shelter, wanted her to see a doctor, but she told her it was unnecessary. she just had cramps. then on the third day Mrs Lukas, asked her to come to her office. She knew by the way she looked at her that Dampai had told her she was pregnant.
Mrs Lukas:"I've made an appointment for you to see Dr Wilson," (she said.) "Luffi we want to help you, you know that."
Luffi:"You mean you want me to have an abortion?" (She said to her.) "I know Dampai told you!"
Mrs Lukas:"Yes she did. Luffi we can't force you to do anything. But we're here to help you."
Luffi:"Sure, but you still don't wanna me to have my baby?" (She sulked.) "Because then it would cost your rights? I mean you have to pay for me to have my baby and all that. well as soon as i have my baby I am going to get a job and support it myself! I don't need anybody else, you hear me? I am going to keep my baby with me always."
Mrs Lukas:" Luffi you're just a child," (she said.) "You know you're talking nonsense. You can't get a decent job without any training let alone support a baby!"
Luffi:"I will do it! You have no right to tell me what I can or can't do!"
Mrs Lukas:"I will drive you to your appointment tomorrow at three. Meet me here in my office."
