PROJECT: MULTIMEDIA LIBRARY

Our school has a long tradition of delivering excellent academic results for 60 years and will continue to do so. However, we believe there is an opportunity to do even more. We are called, at this time, to review our institutional commitment as we transition to an independent Catholic school. We want to have an integrated approach to building and maintaining an academic program and an environment that will lead to personal transformation.

A history of our school:
‘Mabathoana is a Catholic school run by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, serving young women and men in Grade 8 through Grade 11. Our school was established in 1965 by Sister Laurent Marie, SNJM, and Father Garreau, OMI, at the request of the Archbishop of Maseru, Emmanuel ‘Mabathoana. It was intended to serve the high population of Maseru; at the time, there was just one high school in the area.

The project idea:
This project aims at providing quality digital learning opportunities to our students, encouraging a culture of reading, and promoting critical thinking. This requires the school to have a multipurpose library with digital facilities such as computers, smart boards, library desks, chairs, and e-books.

The new multipurpose library would be accessible to 700 Basotho students. It will enhance their academic abilities and provide them with a convenient study space. Helping students succeed requires more than classroom knowledge alone. We have to come up with a more integrated way of learning that emphasises innovation and creativity. Moreover, we want to build a community of leaders by creating an environment for self-development.

The school library has a collection of over 8,000 books donated since 1976. Some of these books are outdated and no longer meet the educational needs of our students.

In conclusion, we live in the digital age, and for our students to be competitive and creative, we have to make sure that the educational program helps our learners to develop multimedia skills. We need to begin this project with a clear plan and a goal for further development over the next three years.
