Malefetsane Letsela walks into a room and fills it. He is Deaf, from Butha-Buthe, and he goes by Tefo. He is a founder, a designer, a videographer, and one of the clearest voices for inclusion Lesotho has right now — even if his voice comes through his hands.
This Deaf Awareness Month, Tefo has one request for the country: Give us a chance. “My name is Malefetsane Letsela, also known as Tefo Letsela. I am from Butha-Buthe, Lesotho,” he says. “I am passionate about youth empowerment, disability inclusion, Sign Language awareness and creating opportunities for young people.”

Learning never stopped
Tefo finished at St Joseph of Mount Royal High School in 2024. For many that would be the end. For him it was the start.
He enrolled in Sign Language classes because he wants to become an instructor.
He applied to VCUarts Qatar. He continued at Boiphitlelo Community College.
“Finishing high school does not mean learning has to stop,” he says. “There are always new skills to learn and new opportunities to pursue.”
