Anne Frank’s Diary - 1942-1944
The notebook that taught the world about courage
The Story
June 12, 1942 - Amsterdam, Netherlands
For her 13th birthday, Anne Frank got a red-and-white checkered diary. She named it "Kitty".
At the time, N**i Germany had occupied the Netherlands. Anne was Jewish. Laws were getting worse every day: Jews couldn’t go to school, couldn’t ride bikes, had to wear a yellow star. 2 weeks later, her older sister Margot got a deportation notice to a N**i work camp. That same day, the Frank family went into hiding.
2 Years in Hiding
Anne, her parents, her sister, and 4 other people hid in a secret annex behind her father’s office building. The entrance was hidden behind a bookcase.
For 761 days they couldn’t make noise during the day, couldn’t open windows, and had to live in fear of being found.
Anne was 13-15 years old during this time. Instead of school, friends, and normal life... she had 4 walls and a notebook.
What she wrote
She didn’t just write "Dear Diary, today was boring."
She wrote about:
1. Fear: Air raids, arguments in the annex, not knowing if they’d survive
2. Growing up: First crushes, fighting with her mom, figuring out who she was
3. Hope: "I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart."_
4. The war: What she heard on the radio about concentration camps
Her father, Otto Frank, had asked the family to keep diaries and documents so the truth wouldn’t be lost after the war. Anne took that seriously. She even rewrote parts of her diary to make it into a book someday.
August 4, 1944
Someone betrayed them. The N**is raided the annex. All 8 people were arrested and sent to concentration camps.
