In 2019, iEARN-Liberia ventured through the impassable roads leading to southeastern Liberia to recruit participants for the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study exchange program.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs (ECA) to provide full scholarships for high school students to study for one academic year in the United States.
After a competitive and merit-based recruitment and selection process, nine students were selected as finalists and scheduled to travel to the United States in late 2019. Unfortunately, the sponsors suspended the program due to the Corona Virus pandemic.
Today, we are excited to announce that our 2019 scholarship beneficiaries from southeastern Liberia have finally made it to the United States. Many thanks to our partners, the Ministry of Education and the U.S Embassy, for their continuous support for the program. Special thanks to the U.S Embassy Public Affairs office for facilitating the issuance of the J-1 visas for our students. We wish our students a successful exchange year. Our next recruitment exercise will target students from Montserrado and Cape Mount.

The YES program has always been a long lasting opportunity for exchange students. A year in the U.S is worth a million as students build stronger bond with the people that help and care for them throughout their exchange.
Check up Antoinette N. Weah (YES'19 alumni of Liberia) who host family came to visit her and to as well tour some part of Liberia while here. Antoinette family arrived in Liberia on May 13, 2021 and left yesterday May 26, 2021.
Antoinette who was hosted in Oroville, California by the Woods family during her exchange in 2018 - 2019 was please to have hosted her American family: Fred Wood (host Dad), Heather Wood (host Mom), and Adeline Wood (host Sister) here in Liberia. The visitation lasted for two weeks and was full of amazing activities as purposed;
*Shopping and tour in Monrovia using google Mitch,
*Learning to do laundry the Liberian way,
*Doing hair, visiting one of the famous landmark "the sunset beach" and swimming, *Host Dad preaching in local church on the theme "family",
*Trying some spicy Liberian meals and etc.
Kindly find below a peace from Antoinette herself as well as some fun photos with her American family, as we continue to be thankful to the U.S. Embassy Monrovia, Liberia , Youth Exchange and Study (YES) , and IEARN-Liberia for opportunity that have led to many other....
"While on my exchange year, I built a very strong bond with my host parents. I told them the ills of my country and most especially the blessings and fun things we have in Liberia that we usually don’t appreciate. Returning home was hard because I was sad to leave them but excited to come home. My mom and I cried the entire night before my departure. We kept in touch on the internet in our family group chat. There were even plans for my return to the States but they got tired of waiting for my visit since the US embassy stopped giving visas to immigrants. It was a big surprise when she sent me the photos of their passports and said they miss me so much and will come to see me. It all fell in place because they’ve always wanted to do some missionary work in Africa. I believe that my host family got interested in coming to my country not only because they missed me and wanted to do missionary work, but because of how much I expressed love and hope for mama Liberia. I was overwhelmed with joy when they told me that they want the full experience and will sleep, eat, and do everything I do here, know my people, love them and have fun. It has been a blast since they came here and two weeks felt like only 2hours".

With the help of a grant from the U.S. Embassy Monrovia, IEARN-Liberia provides continued professional development for Kennedy-Lugar YES Abroad high school exchange alumni. Since 2010, with the help of Peace Corps Liberia and Liberia's Ministry of Education, IEARN-Liberia recruited 65 high schoolers from 11 counties to participate in the exchange program. Now back in Liberia, these alumni are important members of student and youth communities across Liberia.
Creating positive change takes work though, so IEARN-Liberia provides project-based learning activities aimed to improve creative thinking and problem-solving approaches. They also train in citizen journalism, digital storytelling, design thinking, and leveraging technology for civic engagement. #CommunityImpact

Alternates are placed on a waiting list, meaning they will not be guaranteed a spot in the YES program. Alternates may be upgraded to "finalist" candidates as space in the program becomes available. It is not guaranteed that all alternates will be upgraded. Candidates will be updated about their status throughout the process.

Youth Exchange and Study (YES)

The Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has made the difficult decision not to bring YES participants on program this coming fall. We know, for the hundreds of young students who worked so hard to earn this scholarship, that this is difficult news. The program is considering alternate forms of programming, such as a semester program starting in January, and will communicate with finalists as those develop. Despite this, the YES family remains strong and united, and will meet this challenge as all others – together.
