Remembering My Late Mother, Watta Mento Kanneh
In Loving Memory of My Mother, Watta Mento Kanneh (†2008)
Today, I pause to remember and honor my beloved mother, Watta Mento Kanneh, who passed away in 2008.
My mother was a homemaker, but her contribution to our family was far greater than any title could describe. She was a woman of sacrifice, strength, love, and determination. She devoted herself to raising us, caring for our family, and, most importantly, supporting our education and encouraging us to become better people.
She understood that education was one of the greatest gifts a parent could give a child. Through her sacrifices and support, she helped provide us with the foundation upon which we could build our lives. Whatever accomplishments we have achieved, her fingerprints are part of our story.
My mother also had roots in Popolahun, Lofa County, Liberia, which remains an important part of her heritage and identity. The values, principles, and love she gave to her family continue to live through us.
Her Legacy Lives On Through Education
One of the greatest ways we have chosen to honor our mother is by keeping her name alive through education.
In her memory, we established the Watta Mento School of Excellence, carrying the name of the woman whose sacrifices helped shape our lives. The school serves children, particularly those from less privileged and underserved families, giving them access to education and opportunities that can transform their futures.
This school is more than a building bearing her name. It is a living memorial to her.
Every child who enters its doors, every teacher who helps shape a young mind, and every student who discovers hope and opportunity through education carries a small part of her legacy forward.
My mother invested in the education of her children. Today, through the Watta Mento School of Excellence, that investment continues to reach other children.
That is how we want her to be remembered—not only as our mother, but as a woman whose sacrifice continues to make a difference in the lives of others.
Although she has been gone since 2008, her memory has never left us. A mother may leave this world, but the love she gives, the sacrifices she makes, and the values she instills in her children can live for generations.
Mom, you may have left us, but your legacy remains alive.
Your name is on a school.
Your values are in your children.
Your sacrifice lives through the education of others.
Your memory lives in our hearts.
We will continue to tell your story to our children and grandchildren so that they will know the woman whose love, sacrifice, and commitment helped shape our family.
Watta Mento Kanneh—your life mattered, your sacrifices mattered, and your legacy matters.
May the Watta Mento School of Excellence continue to stand as a lasting tribute to your memory and as a beacon of hope for children who deserve an opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
Rest peacefully, Mom.
You have not been forgotten.
You will never be forgotten.
Your name and your legacy will live on through generations.
