Good day to the organizers, fellow panelists, distinguished guests, and everyone gathered here to celebrate International Women’s Day.
My name is Fatu Salia Nyei, and it is a privilege to be part of this important conversation.
I serve as the Board Secretary and the Principal of the African Leadership Academy School System. For more than fifteen years, I have also worked as a business entrepreneur, which has given me practical experience in leadership, enterprise, and community development.
In terms of my academic preparation, I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Liberia. I also earned a Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management from the Liberia Institute of Public Administration and a Graduate Diploma in Peace Studies from the Kofi Annan Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Liberia.
At present, I am pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Liberia.
Today I will share some reflections on the topic “Give to Gain.”
This theme may appear simple, yet it carries a powerful message about growth, leadership, and the way we build strong communities.
Many people believe that success is mainly about what we receive. Society often measures progress by how much we gain, how far we rise, or what we accumulate over time. But experience teaches us another truth.
In many cases, the most meaningful success begins with what we are willing to give.
Giving does not only mean giving money or material resources. Giving can take many forms. We give when we offer our time, knowledge, encouragement, patience, and opportunities to others.
Sometimes the most valuable gift we can give someone is simply believing in their ability. A single moment of encouragement can change a person’s direction in life.
In my work within education, I see this principle every day. A teacher who gives time to guide a struggling student is not simply helping with a lesson. That teacher is building confidence, discipline, and hope. The effect of that investment can last for years.
This is why the principle of “Give to Gain” is so important. When we give something meaningful to others, we plant seeds. Those seeds may not grow immediately, but over time they produce results that benefit both the giver and the receiver.
For women, this message carries special significance. Women have long played essential roles in families, institutions, and communities. We nurture, we organize, we guide, and we support. Many of these contributions happen quietly, yet they shape the strength of society.
However, in many cases women do not receive the recognition or opportunity that matches their effort. That is why gatherings such as International Women’s Day are important.
They remind us not only to celebrate achievements but also to encourage continued progress.
One powerful way women can advance progress is by practicing the principle of supporting one another.
When women mentor younger women, share opportunities, and encourage one another’s success, the impact spreads far beyond individuals.
Let us consider the role of mentorship.
Many successful individuals can point to someone who guided them at an important moment. A mentor may offer advice, encouragement, or simply share experience.
That act of giving knowledge helps someone else avoid mistakes and move forward with greater confidence.
Another important form of giving is service.
Leadership is often misunderstood as a position of authority.
In reality, true leadership begins with service. A good leader asks how their actions will
benefit others.
When leaders focus on service, they earn trust.
When they earn trust, they build influence. And when they build influence, they gain the ability to create lasting change.
Giving also involves creating opportunities. Many of us are here today because someone opened a door for us.
Someone saw potential and allowed us to step forward.
As women in leadership, education, business, and community development, we must continue this tradition.
When we create opportunities for others, we help build a stronger future.
However, giving must also be balanced with personal development.
We cannot give our best if we do not invest in our own growth. Education, discipline, and continuous learning are essential.
When we strengthen our own abilities, we increase our capacity to contribute meaningfully to others.
The truth is that life often reflects what we invest in it.
When we give integrity, effort, and compassion, those values tend to return to us in different forms.
They return through relationships, respect, and opportunities.
This is the deeper meaning behind “Give to Gain.” It is not simply about immediate reward.
It is about building a life and a community where generosity, support, and service create lasting progress.
As we reflect on this message today, I encourage each of us to consider the ways we can give within our own spheres of influence.
We can give encouragement to young girls who are still discovering their strength.
We can give knowledge to those who seek guidance.
We can give opportunities where we have the ability to open doors.
And we can give our best efforts in the roles we hold within our families, workplaces, and communities.
When we adopt this mindset, the gains we experience will not only be personal achievements. The gains will include stronger institutions, empowered women, and communities that continue to grow.
In conclusion, giving is not a loss. It is an investment in people, in progress, and in the future.
When we give sincerely and intentionally, we create a cycle where success is shared and where every generation has the chance to rise.
