Guinean Army Chief Ibrahima Sory Bangoura announces withdrawal of troops from Liberia and Sierra Leone borders

The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Guinea has announced withdrawal of Guinean troops from Liberia and Sierra Leone Borders beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2026 👇

“MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENSE, GUINEA

The General Staff of the Armed Forces informs national and international public opinion that, following the Summit of Heads of State of the Mano River Union held in Conakry this Monday, March 16, 2026, it was agreed, among other things:

To end border disputes between the three states through diplomatic channels;

To encourage interstate cooperation to guarantee a climate of security and trust between neighboring peoples linked by history, geography, and culture;

To this end, the General Staff of the Armed Forces wishes to thank the people of Guinea for their patriotism and the calm observed during this period.

He also congratulates the Defense and Security Forces involved, who demonstrated proactivity and self-control in carrying out their sovereign mission.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces, on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of the Guinean Armed Forces and the Minister of National Defense, reiterates its commitment to firmly defend every portion of the national territory, a symbol of our sovereignty.

For the effective implementation of the conclusions of this summit, the General Staff of the Armed Forces decides on the gradual reduction of the defense deployment along Guinea's borders, starting Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces calls on the population to remain vigilant and to support peace and dialogue initiatives between the brotherly countries of the Mano River Union.

On September 9, 1990, former Liberian President Samuel Kanyon Doe took what would become his final official journey.

That morning, he left the Executive Mansion on Capitol Hill and traveled to the Free Port of Monrovia on Bushrod Island to meet with the ECOMOG Force Commander, Arnold Quainoo.

President Doe rode in an ultra-silver Mercedes Benz S300 limousine, a vehicle that would later be remembered as his “last ride.”

Upon arrival at the Free Port, his security detail was disàrmed by ECOMOG soldiers. Shortly after, forces of the Independent National Patriotic Front of Liberia (INPFL), launched an . Many of Doe’s guards were kïllęd, and the President was wøünded and c@ptured.

He was taken to the INPFL base in Caldwell, where he was tørtüred and later kïllęd.

Today, the vehicle that carried him on that final journey is preserved as a historical artifact at the National Museum of Liberia - a silent reminder of one of the most dramatic and tragic days in Liberia’s history.
