The Geography Teachers Association of Liberia, an integral part of The Liberian Geographical Society -LGS, joins the Board, Management, and entire membership of LGS in extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues of the late Associate Professor David L. Wiles, Sr., who passed away on December 27, 2024, in Monrovia.

Prof. Wiles, fondly celebrated as the "Father of Geography" in Liberia, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in geography and environmental studies. His pioneering contributions and lifelong dedication to advancing geographical education and environmental awareness remain unmatched in Liberia’s academic and professional spheres.

Through his tireless efforts and passion, Prof. Wiles inspired countless students and professionals, leaving an enduring impact that earned him prestigious recognition from the Liberian Geographical Society for his profound influence on the field.

We mourn the loss of this remarkable son of Liberia and honor his extraordinary life and work. May the gentle soul of Prof. David L. Wiles, Sr., rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to guide and inspire us all.

The Liberian Geographical Society -LGS, in collaboration with the Geography Teachers Association of Liberia and in partnership with Pedagogy Liberia organized an insightful one-day referral workshop training for geography & social studies teachers on Saturday, July 22, 2023, just in time for re-opening of schools. It was truly special to see teachers from diverse backgrounds come together as LGS shared valuable resources and global opportunities, enriching the learning experience for students.

This initiative further supports the continuous efforts to advance geography and environmental learning in Liberia. Kudos to all participating organizations and the dedicated educators!

The Liberian Geographical Society -LGS is a non-profit academic body of academics, practitioners, and educators in geography, GIS, and environmental issues across the country. The Liberian Geographical Society was established in 2017 by a team of Liberian academics, professionals, and teachers, under the auspices of the IAYG, an international organization in geographic education.
Our mission is to help develop the next generation of geographers whose innovations will help to address the major unmet needs of our global community. Our focus objective is to promote Geographical learning across Liberia through research, training, and mentorship and coaching.

The Liberian Geographical Society -LGS is a consortium of different registered professional Geographic groups in the country namely:

>The Liberia Association of Geographers (LAG)

>International Association of Young Geographers of Liberia - IAYG-Liberia

>Geography Teachers Association of Liberia (GTAL)

>Liberian Society of Cartography & Geographic Information System (LSCGIS)

As part of our activities, we organize events for geography, GIS, and environmental studies educators, connecting educators, and linking them with valuable educational materials. We also organize events for students in high schools, create awareness on the need to protect our environment; we work with communities’ leaders and municipal authorities to spread the message of keeping our environment clean. We hope to put development on the map: helping advance this critical field of study, which both develops spatial reasoning skills necessary for knowledge economy careers and helps chart Liberia’s global future.

The Liberian Geographical Society -LGS also has over four years of rich experience in providing technical geospatial services in the use of satellites imagery for urban land use planning, natural resources assessment, customized GIS applications Development, GPS data processing, land surveying, area mapping and zoning, capacity building and map production.

The Liberian Geographical Society -LGS specializes in providing solutions for multi sectorial geospatial projects including area surveying, zoning and mapping of infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. We have executed several assignments related to forest monitoring, urban land inventory, developing ICT architecture and tool development for monitoring purposes. Our domain experts including Geographers, Environmentalist, Surveyors, GIS experts, IT experts, Cartography/Mapping technicians, and Land use experts are qualified to provide decision-aiding inputs for projects.
