Why Should we encourage a growth mindset for our students? 1) A growth mindset will increase students love for learning.
“Children with a fixed mindset are afraid to try new things because they don’t want to look dumb. Their goal is to look smart and avoid tasks they could fail at.
Over time, this means they are less likely to enjoy the process of learning because they are more concerned with demonstrating what they already know rather than making the effort and putting in the hard work to develop new abilities.
Children with a growth mindset view tasks that challenge them as their favourite tasks of all. This positive view of challenge helps to fuel a spirit of curiosity, giving children the confidence to engage fully with the learning process and develop their problem solving skills all while having fun.
2) A growth mindset will improve your child’s exam results
Dweck’s study followed hundreds of students through their transition from primary to secondary school. She found that those who had a growth mindset achieved higher grades when compared to those with a fixed mindset, despite all starting at a similar level. This is because their goal is to learn, even if that means appearing dumb to their peers when learning something new.”

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs - Helping our students achieve their fullest potential. “For a child to be successful in school they need to be well fed, sleeping well, feeling safe at home, and have confidence in themselves. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a popular theory which focuses on a series of needs to be successful. Abraham Maslow was an American psychologist who in 1943 published his hierarchy of needs to explain human motivation. He considered there were five needs – physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualisation and he put them in the shape of a pyramid.
Maslow placed these needs in an order for one to be realised for the next to happen. Beginning with the foundational aspects of the basic needs – physiological and safety and eventually reaching the top of the pyramid to self-actualisation, which refers to a person reaching their fullest potential as a human being.
Maslow’s theory has its supporters and its critics. The main criticism being that his theory isn’t based on rigorous empirical data, but more on philosophy. However, the theory still serves as a simple framework and helpful reminder, that all learners are less likely to be successful if their basic needs are not met. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs can help focus on what children need, and to identify where there are gaps, for example, breakfast may be provided for children who come to school hungry.
If you go through the details of the needs this may become clearer:
1) Physiological needs are about having the right nutrition and water, access to fresh air, enough rest and exercise.
2) Safety needs are about security and feeling safe – physically and emotionally, the need to have shelter/a home and to have stability in one’s life.
3) Belongingness and love and are to do with others, the social side of feeling that you belong, are connected, loved and included.
4) Esteem needs concerns inner self – having feelings of achievement, being recognised, having power over one’s life and being a person different from another person.
5) Self-actualization is to do with achieving one’s full potential, being creative and finding that specialness of oneself.
From a purely child development stance, all child developmental needs are encompassed in Maslow’s theory – physical development, emotional development, social development, cognitive and language development and aesthetic development.
What’s important to take away from looking at Maslow’s theory is that the positive human condition rests on being healthy in body and mind. You have to attend to the basic needs of a child before you can expect them reach their full potential.”

The Kumba Academy (Elementary school) will strive to create a safe learning space where the students of Liberia will feel comfortable learning and growing and where they feel a sense of belonging. Reasons for low education rates in Africa is the lack of proper schooling facilities and unequal opportunities for education across countries.
It is widely accepted that most of Africa's education and training programs suffer from low-quality teaching and learning, as well as inequalities and exclusion at all levels. Even with a substantial increase in the number of children with access to basic education, a large number still remain out of school.
Help Us Help Them. “Giving children a chance to learn is one of the most urgent priorities in Liberia. Liberia has an adult literacy rate that is less than 50% because generations of children have gone without adequate education. This illiteracy affects all areas of life, ultimately trapping children and families in a never-ending cycle of poverty.”
