We write to express greived frustration in the manner and form in which student leaders are handled in Liberia, and to clearly state our position moving forward.
If you remember in January of 2018, the government of Liberia made a commitment not only to protect the rights of Liberians in giving freedom of speech, but also to provide us with our freedom of political gathering.
Fellow Liberians, it is quite unfortunate to say that, the unfolding situation leading to the unlawful confiscation of a militant, and the imprisonment of student leaders especially from theUniversity of Liberia contradicts said commitment thus, the Progressive Student Unification Alliance of William V. S. Tubman University demands from the government of Liberia a rapid release of the imprisoned students, including the President of ULSU Mau F. Maiwo. The government needs to act to ensure that those students are provided the relevant required protection by the laws of Liberia.
Assassination, brutality and harassment of student leaders must stop in this contemporary era! I remember, cadres and militants of the Student Unification Party (SUP) were killed erstwhile. Those victimized during the provision of advocacy for the well-being of Liberians included: Tonia Richardson, wuo Tapiah, Teah Fargarthy, TaplahWEAH who was beheaded, and the list goes on.
We reprobate the laxity of those tyranny dictatorial acts against well meaning students of our country. We do not want a recurrence of Police bbrutality in this country anymore that led to the lost of lives during former Liberian President Samuel K. Doe's regime.
We want to let the public know that we are greatly concern about what is happening, and our principal concern in the current situation is the commonweal of the Student leaders. Expressing deep sympathy with our fellow students, we call on President George M. Weah to kindly order the release of the jailed students and handle what ever situation gently! The superannuated tendency of flogging and intimidating students should stop, and the improvement of the lives of our people should be focused in this neo Liberia.
