When the ILAP Project began, baseline assessments revealed that many learners had limited foundational literacy skills, while many schools had little or no structured phonics instruction.
Over the past year, teachers and school leaders have been trained, coached, and supported to deliver evidence-based literacy instruction. Today, learners are progressing from letter sounds to blending, decoding, sight words, reading simple sentences, and now reading stories with confidence.
Alice, a Grade 2 learner at Christ Mission School System, shared:
"I like reading stories with my friends' and family members' names. My favorite story is The Lost Kite because my uncle's name is Toe. Reading these stories makes me happy."
Through culturally relevant literacy materials, children see themselves, their families, and their communities reflected in the stories they read.
This is why we do this work, not just to teach children how to read, but to help them discover the joy of reading.
From sounds to stories. From learning to read to loving to read.

We commend the Ministry of Education, especially the Bureau of Basic and Secondary Education for the innovative digitization of the school permit registration process. This initiative is making permit acquisition faster, more reliable, transparent, and efficient, reducing delays and simplifying the process for schools across Liberia.
In support of this national initiative, Left Bank Educational District, in collaboration with New Joy-Liberia, is providing hands-on training and technical support to school leaders and designated personnel on the digitized permit registration process for the 2026/2027 academic year. Our goal is to help schools successfully upload the required documents and obtain their permits with confidence and ease.
As an organization committed to educational excellence, New Joy-Liberia is open to partnering with District Education Offices across Liberia to support school leaders in navigating the digital permit registration process. Together, we can build digital capacity, improve efficiency, and ensure that no school is left behind.
Together, we are leveraging technology to strengthen school leadership and build a stronger education system for Liberia.
