π Are We Sacrificing Our Children's Well-being in the Name of Education?
As a teacher with many years of experience, I have always believed that education has the power to transform lives. I strongly support learning beyond the classroom. Extra tuition, whether conducted physically or online, can help students strengthen their understanding, build confidence, and prepare for examinations.
My concern is **not** about tuition.
My concern is about a growing trend that deserves serious attention from parents, teachers, schools, and society.
Tonight, as I write this post, the time is **10.50 p.m.** Yet many children are still attending live online tuition classes. Some are in primary school. Others are in middle school. While most adults are preparing to end their day, these children are still staring at screens, taking notes, and trying to absorb new lessons.
This made me stop and ask:
*Is this really the best way for children to learn?*
Modern education should not simply be about increasing the number of study hours. Learning is not a competition to see who can stay awake the longest. True learning happens when the brain is alert, focused, and well rested.
Sleep is not wasted time. It is one of the most important parts of learning.
When children sleep, their brains organise information, strengthen memory, improve problem-solving skills, and prepare for the next day's learning. Children who regularly lose sleep may struggle with concentration, memory, attention, emotional control, and motivation. They may also experience increased stress, anxiety, and fatigue.
Many children already spend:
* Nearly seven hours at school.
* Hours travelling.
* Time completing homework and assignments.
* Additional hours attending physical tuition.
* Then several more hours in online classes that continue late into the night.
We celebrate children for working harder and studying longer.
But perhaps we should also ask:
*Are they learning better?*
