One-Fifth of Our People Are Struggling — Let’s Not Ignore the Mind
These days, almost one-fifth of Sri Lankans are silently battling depression. It’s not just a statistic — it’s our friends, our family members, our students, and sometimes even ourselves.
In our society, we speak openly about fevers, headaches, or injuries… but when it comes to our mind, we tend to stay silent. Counselling, psychology, and mental wellbeing are still seen as “unnecessary” or “something to avoid.” Because of this, many people suffer longer than they should.
But here’s the truth:
Your mind is the engine that runs your entire life.
If it struggles, everything else begins to fall apart — confidence, relationships, motivation, work, and even physical health.
That’s why understanding psychology, nurturing a positive mindset, and seeking counselling when needed are not signs of weakness. They are signs of courage, maturity, and self-respect.
Sri Lankans have neglected these areas for too long. It’s time we change that culture.
Let’s start valuing emotional wellbeing the same way we value education, nutrition, and physical health.
Let’s make counselling normal.
Let’s make talking about feelings safe.
Let’s make mental strength a priority — for us, for our children, and for the future of this country.
A healthy mind is not a luxury. It’s a necessity.
