This collection of essays brings together the first generation of Sri Lankan readers and interpreters of the French philosopher Quentin Meillassoux. Meillassoux’s path-breaking philosophical debut Après la finitude. Essai sur la nécessité de la contingence was translated into Sinhala and was subsequently published by Theertha Publications in 2019. Since then, many public readings of the book as well as detailed and sometimes intense discussions around it were organized by the Theertha School of Art, triggering a wide range of theoretical reflections. This collection is thus also a historical record documenting a unique reception of a new philosophical project in Sri Lanka, circulating between the artistic as well as the political discourses that stand at the borders of the traditional academia.
It also contains a hitherto unpublished essay by Meillassoux himself, both in Sinhala translation as well as in original French, so that the general readership of Meillassoux’s thought, both in and outside Sri Lanka can benefit from it.

Call for Applications:

“Our Stories” is an initiative of The Asia Foundation through which life stories and lessons shared by elders, are transformed by youth artists into visual and performing arts and new media.

The Foundation has partnered with the Theertha International Artists’ Collective for this purpose and is calling for applications from artists in six districts: Ampara, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Mannar, Trincomalee and Vavuniya. Interested individuals can apply under one of the following two categories: Regional ProfessionalArtists (RPA) or Young Amateur Artists (YAA). The application forms for each category are attached and are available in English, Sinhala and Tamil.
Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a series of workshops led by Theertha, through which they will be guided on the process of transforming stories into art. The arts developed through this project will be featured at the OurStories exhibition that the Foundation hopes to conduct in Colombo in mid-2021.

Deadline for applications: extended till November 15, 2020

CITIZENFOUR චිත්‍රපටය සැබෑ ජීවිතය තුළ දිගහැරෙන ත්‍රාසජනක කතාවකි. එය චිත්‍රපට අධ්‍යක්ෂිකා ලෝරා පොයිට්‍රස් හා මාධ්‍යවේදී ග්ලෙන් ග්‍රීන්වෝල්ඩ්, එක්සත් ජනපදයේ නැෂනල් සිකියුරිටි ඒජන්සිය (එන්එස්ඒ) වෙනුවෙන් සේවය කළ විශ්ලේෂකයකු වූ එඩ්වඩ් ස්නෝඩන් මුණ ගැසුණු ඒ ඓතිහාසික මොහොතට සහභාගී වීම සඳහා ප්‍රේක්ෂකයින්ට ප්‍රවේශපත්‍රයක් ලබා දෙයි. හොං කොං හි සිදු වූ එම හමුවේ දී ස්නෝඩන් ඔවුන් දෙදෙනා අතට පත් කළේ තම එජන්සිය හා සහකාර ඔත්තු සේවා විසින් ක්‍රියාත්මක කරනු ලැබූ පුළුල් පරිමාණ හා නීතිවිරෝධී ඔත්තු බැලීමේ ජාලයක් පිළිබඳ රහස් ලිපිලේඛන සමුදායකි. එමඟින් එක්සත් ජනපදය, එක්සත්රා ජධානිය හා ඔවුන්ගේ මිත්‍ර රටවල් විසින් ලොව පුරා ක්‍රියාත්මක කෙරෙන මහජනතාවන්ට එරෙහි ඔත්තු බැලීමේ ක්‍රියාවලියක් එළිදරව් කෙරුණේ ඒවායේ සමාජ-දේශපාලන, මෘදුකාංග හා දෘඪාංගමය යටිතලයෙහි සමීප රූප සමඟිනි. ස්නෝඩන්ට අවශ්‍ය වූයේ මේ තොරතුරු එක්සත් ජනපදයේත් ලොව පුරාත් සාමාන්‍ය ජනතාව අතට පත්ව න බවට සහතිකයකි. ඒ වෙනුවෙන් ඔහු සිය දිවි පරදුවට තැබී ය.

CITIZENFOUR චිත්‍රපටය අපව පොයිට්‍රස්, ග්‍රීන්වෝල්ඩ් හා ස්නෝඩන් හමු වූ ඒ හෝටල් කාමරය වෙත ගෙන යයි. ඔවුන් තමන් හෙළි කරමින් සිටින රහස් දැනගැනීමෙන් ඇළලී යන ලෝකය නරඹමින් තමන්ගේ ම ඊළඟ පියවර තීරණය කිරීමටත්, මේ මාධ්‍ය මෙහෙයුම කළමනාකරණය කිරීමටත් දරන වෑයම අපට එහි දී දක්නට ලැබේ. රහස් හෙළි කරන ලිපි පළ වීමත් සමඟ ස්නෝඩන් අත්අඩංගුවට පත් වීමේ අවදානම වේගයෙන් ඉහළ යයි. පොයිට්‍රස්ට පෙරළා එක්සත් ජනපදයට පැමිණ චිත්‍රපටය සංස්කරණය කළ හැකි තත්වයක් නොපවතින බව පෙනී යයි.

CITIZENFOUR රාජ්‍ය ඔත්තුබැලීම්වල අන්තරාය පැහැදිලි කරනවා පමණක් නො වේ - එය එම ඔත්තුබැලීම්වල තරම අපට දැනෙන්නට සලස්වයි. මේ චිත්‍රපටය නැරඹීමෙන් පසු ඔබ තවදුරටත් ඔබේ දුරකථනය, ඊමේල් ගිණුම, ක්‍රෙඩිට් කාඩ්පත, වෙබ් බ්‍රවුසරය හෝ සමාජ මාධ්‍ය ප්‍රොෆයිලය ගැන මෙතෙක් සිතූ පරිදි නොසිතනු ඇත.

තව ද විකිලීක්ස්, ජූලියන් අසාන්ජ් හා චෙල්සී මෑනිං විසින් 2010 - 11 සමයෙහි සිදු කරන ලද හෙළිකිරීම් අනුපූරණය කරන ස්නෝඩන්ගේ තොරතුරු අප ජීවත් වන ලෝකය පිළිබඳ අප සතු චිත්‍රය වඩා පැහැදිලි හා විශාල කරයි. ස්නෝඩන්ගේ හෙළිකිරීම්වලින් වසර හතකට පසු 2020 සැප්තැම්බර් 2 වැනි දා, එක්සත් ජනපද අභියාචනාධිකරණයක් ස්නෝඩන් හෙළි කළ ඔත්තු බැලීම් ව්‍යාපෘතිය නීති විරෝධී බව පිළිගත්තේ ය. එහෙත් එම නඩු විභාගයෙහි මූලික සාධකයක් වූ, සෝමාලියාව තුළ එක්සත් ජනපදය කරන මැදිහත්වීම් අධිකරණය විසින් ප්‍රශ්න කෙරුණේ නැත. ඇමෙරිකා එක්සත් ජනපදය ලොව වටා නිරතව සිටින යුද්ධ හා කෝවිඩ් 19 වසංගත තත්වය මැද පරිගණක, ජංගම දුරකථන හා උපාංග පමණක් නො ව 'දේ-බැඳි අන්තර්ජාලය' (Internet of Things) අන් කවර දාකටත් වඩා ප්‍රමුඛත්වයට පැමිණෙමින් පවතින හා ඔත්තුබැලීමේ ක්‍රියාවලීන් වඩාත් පුළුල් ව ඇති අද දවසේ දී ස්නෝඩන්ගේ හෙළිදරව්කිරීම්වල අදාළත්වය හා අර්ථය කුමක් ද?
