2. Academic Writing - අධ්යයන ලිවීම
This is one of the most important areas. It includes writing essays, reports, research papers, and assignments. Students must organize ideas clearly, use formal language, and follow proper structures (introduction–body–conclusion). Referencing and avoiding plagiarism are also essential.
3. Listening (Lectures and Discussions) - ශ්රවණය
Students must understand lectures, take notes, and follow discussions. This requires listening for key points, examples, and explanations, often in different accents or speeds.
4. Speaking (Presentations and Participation) - කථනය
Students use English to give presentations, participate in seminars, ask questions, and discuss ideas. Clear pronunciation, fluency, and confidence are important here.
5. Research Skills - පර්යේෂණ කුසලතා
English is the main language of academic research. Students need it to search for information, read sources, summarize findings, and write literature reviews.
6. Critical Thinking and Argumentation - විවේචනාත්මකව සිතීම හා තර්කනය
Students must express opinions, analyze ideas, compare theories, and build arguments in English. This involves using appropriate academic vocabulary and logical structure.
7. Note-taking and Summarizing - සටහන් ලිවීම හා සාරාංශ කරණය
Students often need to take notes during lectures and summarize texts. This helps them understand and remember information efficiently.
8. Exams and Assessments - විභාග හා ඇගයීම්
Many exams require written answers in English. Students must understand questions clearly and respond accurately within a time limit.
In short, English at university is not just about grammar—it is about using the language to learn, think, and communicate academic ideas effectively.
