Regional Centre for Maritime Studies proudly convened a significant conference titled “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐁𝐍𝐉 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧”on 4 November 2025 at the KDU Faculty of Graduate Studies Auditorium.

This event brought together diplomats, policymakers, academics, and maritime stakeholders to explore the transformative potential of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement.

📚 The course was expertly delivered by 𝐌𝐫. 𝐏𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐡 and 𝐌𝐫. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐢 from SAR Training Australia, sharing valuable knowledge and practical insights in modern SAR operations.

A total of 11 participants from the Sri Lanka Navy and the 𝐂𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐥 𝐀𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 took part, strengthening their expertise in operational duties at the 𝐌𝐑𝐂𝐂 and 𝐀𝐑𝐂𝐂.

This programme brings together 10 participants from 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐃𝐅𝐀𝐑) to strengthen knowledge and capacity in the fisheries sector.

The Regional Centre for Maritime Studies (RCMS) successfully concluded the Search and Rescue (SAR) On-Scene Coordinator Course from 𝟗–𝟏𝟐 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, conducted in collaboration with 𝐒𝐀𝐑 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐚 and the Australian High Commission, Sri Lanka.

Thirteen participants from the Sri Lanka Navy, 𝐒𝐫𝐢 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐚 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐃𝐅𝐀𝐑) gained hands-on training, led by Mr. Peter Welch and Mr. Leslie Parducci of SAR Training Australia.

The inauguration was graced by Admiral Priyantha Perera (Retd.), former Commander of the Navy, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, the Vice Chancellor of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and Commander Jean Baptiste of the French Embassy.
