✨ Faculty of Technology KDU Students Lead Successful Flood-Relief Initiative ✨

Students from Intakes 39 and 40 of the Faculty of Technology KDU successfully carried out a meaningful flood-relief initiative today, extending much-needed support to communities affected by the recent disaster. The event showcased exceptional leadership from the senior students, who organized the collection of essential items such as food and sanitary supplies.

The donations were handed over to the Sirasa Sahana Yathra campaign after prior coordination with Sirasa TV management. The initiative also drew strong support from junior students of Intakes 42, who worked enthusiastically alongside their seniors throughout the process.

Several academic staff members joined the effort as well, contributing and participating in the event to encourage and stand with the students.

The dedication, teamwork, and compassion displayed by the students were widely appreciated, making this a proud and inspiring moment for the entire Faculty of Technology. The success of the initiative reflects a strong commitment to community service and the collective spirit of both students and staff.

Intake 43 Inauguration Ceremony✨

The Intake 43 Inauguration Ceremony was held on 18th November 2025 at the FGS Auditorium. The event was graced by the Dean of the Faculty of Technology, Heads of Departments, and both senior and junior academic staff. The ceremony marked the official commencement of academic activities for the new intake, creating an inspiring and welcoming environment for the incoming students.

Faculty of Technology Bids Farewell to Major V. Parameshwaran
The Faculty of Technology bid a heartfelt farewell today to one of its most respected lecturers, Major V. Parameshwaran. He was a dedicated and inspiring figure in the Biomedical Instrumentation degree program, where he profoundly impacted countless students.
Dean Prof. Bimali Jayawardana, along with the faculty and students, expressed their sincere gratitude for Major Parameshwaran's invaluable contributions and unwavering commitment to academic excellence. His guidance and expertise will be deeply missed.
We wish Major V. Parameshwaran all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his exceptional service to the Faculty of Technology.

🔥 Hayleys Fentons Conducts Fire Detection Systems Workshop for KDU Undergraduates

The Faculty of Technology, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, recently hosted a two-day intensive workshop on fire detection systems for undergraduates of the BET (Hons) in Building Services Technology programme — Intake 39, 40, and 41. The sessions, held on 1–2 August 2025, were expertly conducted by Hayleys Fentons, a leading name in Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) engineering solutions.
Special thanks go to Eng. Thisara Rathnaweera, System Engineer – MEP at Hayleys Fentons, for delivering an impactful and highly interactive programme. His engaging delivery and commitment to sharing practical knowledge provided students with a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of fire safety technology.

Day 1 of the workshop covered:

• Introduction to MEP systems in the building services industry.
• Fundamentals of fire science, including the fire tetrahedron, types of fire, and differences between passive and active fire protection.
• Fire safety requirements, codes, and compliance standards (CIDA, NFPA, BS standards).
• Overview of active fire protection systems — fire extinguishers, hose reel systems, wet risers, gas suppression systems.
• Fire detection and alarm systems — conventional, addressable, and wireless — along with their components such as detectors, call points, sounders, and control panels.

Day 2 focused on:

• SIMPLEX System Architecture (Johnson Controls) and the Simplex 4100ES system.
• Hands-on practical training, where students installed, configured, and tested fire detection and alarm equipment under real-world scenarios.

The workshop gave students valuable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between classroom theory and professional industry practice. It also reinforced the importance of fire safety in building design and management, preparing future engineers to meet the highest safety standards.

🎓 Successful DAAD Session on Higher Studies & Research in Germany at KDU! 🇩🇪

The Career Guidance Unit of the Faculty of Technology – General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) successfully organized an insightful session on “Higher Studies and Research Opportunities in Germany” on Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, at Lecture Hall 3-1, FGS.

The event was conducted by Ms. Nimaya Manudewa, Regional Officer of the DAAD Information Centre Colombo, who provided a comprehensive overview of academic pathways, research opportunities, and funding options for students aspiring to pursue Master’s and PhD programs in Germany.

Over 100 third- and fourth-year undergraduates actively participated in the session, which covered:

✅ Exploring high-quality education and research in Germany
✅ Step-by-step application procedures for German universities
✅ Student life in Germany
✅ DAAD scholarships for postgraduate studies
✅ An interactive Q&A session to address students’ individual concerns

The session proved highly beneficial, motivating students to broaden their horizons and consider Germany as a top destination for their higher education journey.
