The Healing Power of Nature in Early Childhood Learning . My 12 Years of Journey 🌿

Eighteen years ago, when I first stepped into the world of early childhood education, I never imagined that nature would become the heart of my teaching philosophy.

In 2013, I foundedNorth Star Preschool & Day Care Center Yakkala with a vision not just to teach children, but to create a space where they could truly live, explore, and grow. The sun, wind, rain, soil, and water became our classroom.

Over the years, I witnessed something powerful: nature calms children, heals them, and builds confidence in ways no textbook can.

A child who came to us with speech difficulties was drawn to water play. We simply gave him space to splash, to explore, to feel safe. First came laughter, then words, and eventually conversations. Nature became his first language.

Another child with ADHD struggled in confined spaces. But outdoors, surrounded by trees, soil, and open air, his restlessness transformed into focus. He began to listen, communicate, and cooperate. Nature gave him balance and wellbeing.

That is when I truly understood:
Trees became our teachers.
Mud became our books.
Nature became our lessons.

Learning in nature does not only teach academics it nurtures humanity. It builds curiosity, empathy, creativity, resilience, and collaboration. These are life lessons that cannot be taught on paper.

As I reflect on the difficult decision to close the school after 12 beautiful years, my heart is filled with both pride and gratitude. Saying goodbye was not easy. The love, tears, and heartfelt words from families will stay with me forever.

✨ We donated everything from my school to a newly building preschool in a rural area not as an ending, but as a new beginning for children who need it most.

Sometimes life gently tells us:
“Pause… breathe… and make space for a new chapter.”

Although the doors of North Star are now closed, its spirit lives on — in the hearts of the children who learned, laughed, ran, and grew among the trees.

These 12 years taught me an unforgettable truth:

🌿 Nature teaches us how to live
🌿 Nature is the most beautiful teacher of all

The Healing Power of Nature in Early Childhood Learning: මගේ වසර 11ක North Star Preschool ගමන

වසර 15කට පෙර, කුඩා ළමයින්ගේ අධ්‍යාපනයේ ලෝකයට අත් පිටවූ විට, ස්වභාවය මේතරම් බලවත් ලෙස මගේ ඉගැන්වීමේ දර්ශනයක් බවට පත්වෙනවා කියලා මම සිතාගෙන තිබුණේ නැහැ.

2013දී මම විවෘත කළේ North Star Preschool — ළමයින්ට ඉගැන්වීමට පමණක් නොව, ජීවත් වීමට සුදුසු පරිසරයක් නිර්මාණය කිරීමේ අරමුණක් සමඟය.අව්ව, සුළං, වැසි, නගන හඬවල අතර මම බලාපොරොත්තු වූයේ ළමයින්ට ඔවුන්ගේ සම්පූර්ණ අත්දැකීම් මගින් ඉගැන්විය හැකි තැනක් ලබාදීමටය.

මම කුඩා කාලේ සිට ස්වභාවදහමට සමීපව ජීවත්වීමෙන් මට දැක්කේ ඒක ළමයින්ට කෙසේ සැනසිල්ලක්, සහ සුවයක් ලබා දෙනවාද යන්න. ඉගැන්වීමේ ගමනේදී මට තවත් පැහැදිලි වුණේ — ළමයින්ගේ බොහෝ අභියෝග, මෙන්ම කථා කිරීමේ ප්‍රශ්න, අවධානයේ අඩුපාඩු, හෝ හැසිරීම් ගැටලු තිබුනා

ඒ නිසා ස්වභාවය මගේ ඉගැන්වීමේ හදවතක් වුණා.

එක ළමයෙක් මගේ පාසලට ආවේ කථන අපහසුතාවක් සමඟයි. ඔහුට වැඩි ආකර්ෂණය , උනන්දුව තිබුණේ ජලය සහිත ක්‍රියාකාරකම් වලට. ඒ නිසා අපි ඔහුට අවකාශය දුන්නා — පිටිය තුළ ඔහු ජලය සමඟ ක්‍රීඩා කළේ සතුටින්, අනෙක් ළමයින් සමඟ. සැනසීම් මගින් මතු වූව වචනයි — පළමුව හිනා, පස්සේ වාක්‍ය, ඉන්පසුව සම්පූර්ණ කතාබස්. ස්වභාවය ඔහුගේ පළමු භාෂාව වුණා.

තවත් ළමයෙක් ADHD රෝගයක් සමඟ පැමිණියේය. කුඩා අවකාශයක වැඩී වූ ඔහු නිසා ඔහුට ගමන් කිරීමේ අභිලාෂය දැඩියි. පන්ති මැද අසහනයෙන් සිටි ඔහු පිටියට ගෙන ගිය විට වෙනස් වුණා. ඔහුට පස්, වතුර, ගස් සහ විවෘත අවකාශය දුන්නාම, ඔහුගේ ශක්තිය මනාව යථා තත්ත්වයට ගියා. ඔහු අසා ගැනීමත්, කතා කිරීමත්, සහයෝගයෙන් ක්‍රියා කිරීමත් ආරම්භ කළා. ස්වභාවය ඔහුට සෞඛ්‍යයත් සමත්භාවයත් ලබාදුන්නා.

වර්ෂ ගණනාවක් තුළ මම දැක්කා — ලියවිලි පත්‍ර වලට නොගැලපූ ළමයින් ද, ස්වභාවය තුළ ඉගැන්වීමේ අත්දැකීම් මගින් දක්ෂ සහ විශ්වාසවන්ත ළමයින් බවට පත්වෙනවා. ගස් අපේ ගුරුවරු වුණා. මැටි අපේ පොත් වුණා. සුළං, වැසි සහ හිරු අපේ පාඩම් වුණා.

ස්වභාවය මගින් ඉගැන්වීම ළමයින්ට පමණක් නොව — එය සියලු ළමයින්ට මිනිස් භාවය ඉගැන්වීමක්. එය, උනන්දුව, කරුණාව, සහ නිර්මාණශීලීභාවය වර්ධනය කරවයි. කඩදාසි වලින් ඉගැන්විය නොහැකි පාඩම් ඉගැන්වෙන්නේ මෙහිදීය — කීටයෙක් පරිවර්තනය වන විට නිතිශීලීභාවය, වාළු ගොඩනැගීමේදී එකමුතුකම, සහ තැනකින් තැනට යාමේදී ගැටලු විසඳීම.

අද, North Star Preschool වසා දැමීමේ තීරණය ගැන සිතන විට, මගේ හදවත සතුටින් හා ගෞරවයෙන් පිරෙයි. මේ තීරණය පහසු එකක් නොවුණා. වසර 11ක් පුරා අපේ පාසලේ ගමනට එක් වූ පවුල් රැසක අහිමිවීම ඔවුන්ට ද මටත් වේදනාකාරීය. ඔවුන්ගේ කදුළු සහ ආදරණීය වචන මට අමතක නොවෙන තිස්සේ මතක වනු ඇත.

කෙසේවෙතත්, සමහර වෙලාවට ජීවිතය අපට කියනවා — “හුස්ම ගන්න, නව ආරම්භයකට ඉඩ දෙන්න.” North Star හි දොරටු වසා ගත්තත්, එහි ආත්මය සදාකාලිකව ජීවත්වෙයි — ගස් අතර හඬමින්, දුවමින්, සිනහවෙන් ඉගෙන ගත් ඒ අමුතු කුඩා හදවත් තුළ.

North Star Preschool සමඟ ගත කළ මෙම වසර 11 මට මිනිසුන්, ළමයින්, සහ ස්වභාවය ගැන අමතක නොවන පාඩමක් ඉගැන්වූවා.
ස්වභාවදහම සුවකරනවා. එය ජීවත්වීමට උගන්නනවා. එය ලොව අලංකාරම ගුරුයාය. 🌿💫

The Healing Power of Nature in Early Childhood Learning: My 11-Year Journey at North Star Preschool

Fifteen years ago, when I first stepped into the world of early childhood education, I never imagined how deeply nature would shape not just my teaching philosophy, but also the lives of countless children I’ve had the privilege to guide.

In 2013, I opened the doors to North Star Preschool, a space that would soon become much more than a school, it became a living classroom surrounded by trees, soil, sunshine, and laughter. From the very beginning, I wanted to create an environment where children could learn with their whole being through movement, touch, observation, and curiosity.

Growing up close to nature myself, I had always seen how the outdoors could calm, inspire, and heal. So when I began working with young children, I realized something important: many of the challenges we see in early years attention difficulties, speech delays, emotional regulation are not simply “problems.” Sometimes, they are the child’s way of saying, “I need space. I need movement. I need connection.”

That’s how nature-based learning became the heart of our approach.

One child who joined North Star had a significant speech delay. He rarely spoke and found it hard to connect with peers. I noticed how his face lit up during outdoor water play so we followed his lead. He spent hours pouring, splashing, and laughing with other children around the water table. Slowly, words began to flow first a giggle, then a phrase, then full conversations. Nature, in all its simplicity, became his first language of connection.

Another child, diagnosed with ADHD, struggled to focus or sit still. Having grown up in a small apartment, he craved open space. Inside the classroom, he found it difficult to listen or follow directions but outside, it was a different story. I began taking him outdoors more often, letting him climb, run, dig, and explore freely. Over time, his energy found balance. He began to listen, to participate, and to express himself more calmly. The more he moved in nature, the more he learned to centre himself.

Over the years, I’ve seen children who once resisted learning begin to thrive simply because we gave them permission to learn differently. The trees became our teachers. Mud became our medium. Rain, wind, and sunshine became part of our curriculum.

Nature-based learning doesn’t just help children with special needs, it helps all children. It nurtures resilience, curiosity, empathy, and creativity. It teaches lessons that no worksheet ever could: patience while watching a caterpillar transform, teamwork while building a sandcastle, problem-solving while navigating a puddle.

Looking back, I realize that nature didn’t just heal the children it healed me as an educator too. It taught me to slow down, to observe, and to trust the process. It reminded me that true learning doesn’t always happen inside four walls; it often happens in the moments we least expect, in the open air, where children feel most alive.

And now, as I gently close the doors of North Star Preschool, my heart is full. It’s never easy to say goodbye to a place built with so much love, laughter, and dedication. Many parents and children who walked through these gates became part of our extended family and their tears and words of gratitude mean more than they will ever know.

Closing this chapter was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make. But sometimes, life asks us to pause, to reflect, and to make space for new beginnings. North Star will always remain a symbol of love, nature, and hope a place where countless little hearts bloomed under the open sky.

To every child, parent, and teacher who was part of this journey thank you for believing in this vision. Though the doors of North Star may be closed, its spirit will live on in every child who learned, laughed, and grew among the trees. 🌿💫
