APRIL 12 • the 100th anniversary of the first Dan grading in Shotokan history, April 12th 1924.

A rare photo of (Hironori) Ohtsuka Sensei (bowing, holding certificate) being awarded his (Shodan) 1st Dan by Master Gichin Funakoshi (standing, behind desk) in 1924– the year that Funakoshi Sensei adopted the Kyu / Dan grading from judo, which makes Ohtsuka Sensei one of the first people (possibly the very first) ever to be awarded a Karate black belt under this advancement system.
