Today is Children's Mental Health Awareness Day 💚🎗️

When we speak about children's mental health, we must look beyond academics and achievements.
Mental health begins in the places where children live, learn, play, explore, and feel safe.

Research continues to show that nature connection plays a powerful role in supporting children's emotional well-being, confidence, resilience, and overall mental health. A muddy path, a tree to climb, fresh air, open-ended play, meaningful friendships, and caring adults can positively shape a child's emotional world.

At Forest School Colombo and Finnish Preschool in Colombo, we believe childhood should not be rushed.

Almost 10 years ago, I made a decision that most people around me did not understand.

I chose to walk away from the old path. The traditional, industrial-revolution model of education — built for a world that no longer exists — was not something I was willing to carry forward. I wanted something different. Something that truly serves human beings. That nurtures the whole child — their social, emotional, mental, and physical growth. Not just their ability to sit still, memorise, and perform.

That decision changed the entire direction of my life.

I pursued diplomas and degrees. Content knowledge matters — I believe that deeply. But I learned very quickly that knowledge alone is never enough to build something real and meaningful.

So every year, for at least one month, I travel.

I visit schools across the world. I meet founders, principals, and educators. I spend full days inside their classrooms, walk through their spaces, and ask myself — what are they doing that we are not? What do we need to change? What do we need to build?

This is how I grow. Not from a desk. From experience.

One of those journeys took me all the way to Copenhagen — the capital city of Denmark. I had a question I could not let go of. How were they running a Forest Preschool right in the heart of a capital city?

I had to see it for myself.

I walked into Stenurten and spent a full day with Maibritt Iversen and her wonderful team. I visited every classroom. I explored every space. I watched the philosophy come alive — not on a page, not on a screen, but in the eyes of the children and in the hands of the people who had dedicated their lives to this work.

I came home full. Inspired. Clearer than ever about what I am building and why.

Ten years into this journey — I am still learning. Still travelling. Still asking how we can do this better.

And I will never stop.

Because in a world where information is everywhere and experience is rare — the greatest gift we can give the next generation is people who never stopped growing for them.

We are still building. And the best is yet to come. 🌿
