On the 7th of February 1980, this institute was established with the initiative of the former health minister Mr. G.A.P Gunasekara was the first principal and Mrs. K.K.D.S Ranaweera was the first vice-principal. The school was named after the former Sri Lankan Prime minister Sir John Kohala. At first, there were 80 students and 4 staff members to commence the school. G.A.P Gunasekara, Mr. S.P Ariyadasa became the next principal of Sir John Kothalawala Maha Vidyalaya. The next principal is Mrs.S.A Malani during her tenure the school developed rapidly. During her service, all the needed facilities such as electricity, telephone connection, and office requirements were fulfilled. During her tenure, a suitable school uniform and a school logo were designed. Also, school societies like the prefect Guild, the Eastern band, Scouting were established and the foundation to the platform for students talents was laid. After that Mrs. Ramyalatha Weerakkody assumed the duties as the principal of the school in 2010. With her leadership, the school has developed rapidly in leaps and bounds. The dedication and commitment she has rendered to the development of the school are worthy to be praised.
