The Survey Field Camp 2026 for the E21 Batch undergraduate students of the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya, was successfully conducted in the scenic surroundings of Passara, including Wewassa and Ury Tea Estate lands.

Over ten intensive days of fieldwork, students had the opportunity to strengthen their theoretical knowledge through hands-on experience in a range of traditional and modern surveying techniques. The programme included Chain Surveying, Triangulation, Tacheometric Surveying, Levelling, Digital Data Collection using Total Stations, and GNSS demonstrations

Working in a real field environment enabled the students to develop not only their technical surveying skills, but also essential professional competencies such as teamwork, problem-solving, planning, responsibility, data management, and decision-making under practical field conditions.

The Survey Camp also provided an important opportunity for students to experience the progression from fundamental surveying principles to the application of modern surveying and geospatial technologies used in contemporary engineering practice.

The successful completion of Survey Camp 2026 was made possible through the dedicated guidance and support of the academic staff of the Department of Civil Engineering, together with the tremendous contribution of the Survey Laboratory staff and instructors throughout the programme.

We sincerely appreciate the commitment, enthusiasm, and teamwork demonstrated by all staff members, instructors, and students in making Survey Camp 2026 a meaningful and memorable academic experience.

Prof. Kushan Kalmith Wijesundara Receives the Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake Research Excellence Award at iPURSE 2026

The Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, is proud to announce that Prof. Kushan Kalmith Wijesundara has received the Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake Research Excellence Award, presented at iPURSE 2026.

The award was endowed by Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake, a distinguished alumnus of the University. It recognises research at the highest international level. Candidates are assessed on their research grants (including the prestige of the funding bodies and the size of the awards), publications in high-impact journals, h-index and citations, patents, and wider impact such as policy contributions and innovations.

Prof. Wijesundara's research is in Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics, with a strong focus on computational mechanics. His work includes:

Developing force-based and virtual element formulations for nonlinear structural analysis.
Modelling structures under extreme loads such as earthquakes, wind, impact and blast.
Advancing direct displacement-based seismic design.
Building constitutive models for Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC).

Prof. C.S. Bandara Receives the Tier 4* Research Excellence Award at iPURSE 2026

The Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, is proud to announce that Prof. C.S. Bandara has received the Tier 4* Research Excellence Award, presented at the Peradeniya University International Research Sessions (iPURSE) 2026.

The Research Excellence Award is conferred by the University Research Council (URC) on permanent staff members who reach the Tier 4* category of the transparent research performance scheme set out in UGC Circular 05/2018. Eligibility is based on the h-index, a measure of both research productivity and citation impact. In Engineering, Tier 4* requires an h-index of at least 14. This places Prof. Bandara among the most highly cited researchers at the University.
