In global university rankings, institutions are evaluated based on a range of indicators, including educational outcomes, graduate employability, faculty quality, and research performance.

According to the latest 2026 rankings published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the University of Peradeniya has been ranked No. 1 among universities in Sri Lanka. Out of 21,291 universities worldwide, the University of Peradeniya is ranked 1,695th, placing it among the top 8% of universities globally.

This achievement can be regarded as a significant recognition of the University of Peradeniya’s international-level performance in education and research, further highlighting its contribution and standing within the global higher education community.

The E72–75 batch of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya, has donated a state-of-the-art grid-connected energy storage system comprising a 60 kW hybrid inverter and a 100 kWh battery energy storage system. The project was implemented by SLAM Power (Private) Limited, which also made a significant contribution towards the donation.

The University of Peradeniya Men's Tennis Team secured the University's first-ever Men's Tennis Championship title at the Inter-University Tennis Championship held from 26-28 June and 4-5 July 2026 , marking a historic milestone in the University's sporting achievements. The Women's Tennis Team also recorded an outstanding performance, advancing to the semi-finals and finishing fourth, making this one of the most successful campaigns in the history of University tennis.

The International Conference on the History of Indian Mathematics (ICHIM) 2026 was held on 23 and 24 July 2026 at the University of Peradeniya. It was organized by the Department of Classical Languages, Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, in collaboration with the Assistant High Commission of India in Kandy, the Indian Society for the History of Mathematics, and the Centre for Traditional Indian Knowledge and Skills. The conference was held at the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Conference Chair was Ven. Dr. Jambugahapitiye Dhammaloka, Head of the Department of Classical Languages, Faculty of Arts, while Rochana Jayasinghe served as the Conference Secretary.

The Inauguration took place on 23 July 2026 with Professor W. M. T. Madhujith, Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, as the Chief Guest. The keynote address was delivered by Professor K. Ramasubramanian, an internationally renowned scholar in the history of Indian mathematics, on Sanskrit Scientific Literature: a Gateway to Indian Knowledge Traditions. It was also attended by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Ranjith Pallegama, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. Prabath Ekanayake, the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Wasantha Athukorala, and Assistant Attaché of the Assistant High Commission, Mr. Mahendra Kumar.

Over the two-day conference, scholars and researchers from India, Germany, USA, and Sri Lanka presented papers on a wide range of topics in the history of Indian mathematics. Technical sessions explored themes including historical mathematical texts, astronomy, mathematics education, knowledge transmission, manuscript traditions, manuscript digitisation, and interdisciplinary approaches to South Asia’s mathematical heritage. The sessions also provided opportunities for discussion and exchange among historians, mathematicians, and scholars of classical knowledge systems.

A cultural programme by the university's Cultural Centre was also presented to the delegates as part of the conference at the Diamond Jubilee Auditorium, Faculty of Agriculture.

The conference served as a forum for strengthening academic collaboration between institutions in Sri Lanka and India while encouraging further research into the mathematical and scientific traditions of the region. It also highlighted the value of interdisciplinary approaches to understanding, documenting, and preserving South Asia's intellectual heritage.
