The Main Ceremony of International Week 2026 was held on 23rd September 2026 at the Senate Room, University of Peradeniya. The ceremony featured the traditional oil lamp lighting, welcome and inaugural remarks by University officials, and a keynote address by the Chief Guest. The event also included the Presentation of International Awards of the University of Peradeniya, recognizing contributions towards strengthening internationalization and global engagement within the University.
A Multilateral Cooperation and Exchange Forum was also conducted as part of the Main Ceremony, bringing together distinguished international academics, researchers and representatives of international partner organizations. The forum provided a platform to discuss opportunities for international research, education, employment, collaboration and partnerships, while strengthening existing international relationships and exploring new avenues for cooperation.

The University of Peradeniya has been ranked first in Sri Lanka in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for the third consecutive year in 2026. Our university has secured 200th place globally among more than 2,000 participating universities, reflecting our continued commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible campus development.

This achievement is a testament to the progress we have made through a range of sustainability initiatives, including generating a significant proportion of our energy from renewable sources, installing biomass water heaters, and strengthening our in-house solid waste management systems. A major milestone in this journey is the commencement of a mega project to connect the entire university to the wastewater treatment facility of the Kandy Municipal Council. This transformative initiative will contribute significantly to improving wastewater management and reducing our environmental impact. Through these and other ongoing efforts, we aim to further reduce our carbon footprint and strengthen the University of Peradeniya's position as a leader in sustainable higher education.
Dr. Nalin Suranjith, Director of the Center for Environmental Sustainability, Ms. Kamani Sylva, Deputy Director, members of the Center's staff, and the volunteer undergraduate team, whose dedication, commitment, and leadership have been instrumental in achieving this remarkable recognition. The invaluable assistance and support extended by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Acting Registrar, Bursar, Registrar, and the staff of the General Services Division is highly acknowledged.

The University of Peradeniya (UOP) and Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM) signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) on 09 September 2026, marking an important step towards strengthening academic and research collaboration between the two institutions.

The signing ceremony was held at the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Peradeniya, with senior representatives of the University of Peradeniya participating in person and the delegation from Manipal University College Malaysia joining the ceremony online.

The ceremony was attended by Prof. Terrence Madhujith, Vice-Chancellor, University of Peradeniya; Prof. Nanda Balasooriya, Director, Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS); and Dr. Jayampathi Herath from the University of Peradeniya. Representing Manipal University College Malaysia were Prof. Dr. Jayakumar Gurusamy, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shirani Ranasinghe, and other members of the MUCM delegation.

The Letter of Intent reflects the shared commitment of the University of Peradeniya and MUCM to explore and promote academic cooperation, in accordance with the existing rules and regulations of their respective institutions. The collaboration is intended to encourage cooperation in research, teaching and learning, thereby contributing to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge

The Library Committee of the Faculty of Agriculture will organize the Agriculture Library Open Day-2026 for the third consecutive year. This annual event will be held on 17 September, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Agriculture Library and Appadurai Auditorium, University of Peradeniya. This year, 100 students and their teachers from 20 schools across five educational zones in the Kandy and Matale districts are invited. Each school will be represented by five Grade 12 Biology and Agriculture students and one teacher, ensuring a dynamic and enriching educational experience.

The main objective of this initiative is to raise awareness among Advanced Level Biology and Agriculture students about the comprehensive academic resources available at the Agriculture Library and to encourage their effective use as they pursue higher education in agriculture. The program also aims to provide insights into the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya. In line with the program, an inter-school Library Quest Challenge will also be held, in which teams of five students will participate in a guided exploration of library resources. Winning schools will receive valuable books as a token of appreciation. The event will be graced by the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Agriculture, the Librarian of the University of Peradeniya, as well as academic and non-academic staff members of the Library and the Faculty of Agriculture. Furthermore, a motivational speech will be delivered to the students by Prof. Chalinda Beneragama an eminent academic in the field of Crop Science from the Department of Crop Science of University of Peradeniya.
