How the Text Persuades · New Testament Rhetoric: Understanding Persuasion, Narrative, and Communication in the New Testament

Luke, Paul, John and the writer of Hebrews were not simply recording information. They were persuading real audiences in a world trained in public speech — and they knew exactly what they were doing. This course opens up the classical rhetorical tradition, Greco-Roman practice and Jewish rhetorical habits that shaped how the New Testament argues.

You will learn to recognise ethos, pathos and logos at work; to spot repetition, parallelism, inclusio, chiasm and irony where you had read straight past them; to follow the speeches in Acts and Paul's argument in Romans and Galatians as arguments rather than proof texts; and to weigh the strengths and the limits of rhetorical criticism as an exegetical tool.

Then the return journey: what all of this means for the pulpit. How persuasion works in preaching and teaching today, and where the ethical boundaries of persuasion lie for a Christian communicator.

Early Church History — How We Got Here

"Every doctrine you preach was fought for."

The creeds we recite each week were not handed down ready-made. They were hammered out by people under real pressure, often at real cost, and rarely in the calm we tend to imagine. To know that story is to understand why the Church confesses what it confesses.

Follow the Church from the apostolic age through the years of persecution to the great councils — the fathers and their writings, the controversies they had to answer, and the shape they gave to the faith you have inherited. Six weeks that turn the creeds from words you recite into ground you can stand on.

One of the greatest crises facing the Church today is not a shortage of gifted ministers but a shortage of healthy ones. Many begin well and struggle to finish well, because the health of the inner life goes unattended. Paul's charge to Timothy puts it plainly: "Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers." (1 Timothy 4:16)

Throughout Scripture, God is concerned not only with what his servants do but with who they become. Before he entrusted Moses with Israel, David with a kingdom, Peter with the Church or Paul with the Gentile mission, he first shaped their lives. This course pursues ministerial health as God defines it — spiritually vibrant, emotionally mature, physically disciplined, relationally healthy, morally pure, and faithfully effective in his mission.

Ministerial health is not the same thing as a successful ministry, a large attendance or visible results. A minister can look strong outwardly while being unhealthy within. God's concern is both the character of the servant and the fruit of the service.

Three quarters of your Bible was written in Hebrew, and much of what makes it sing — the wordplay, the rhythm, the deliberate repetition — survives translation only partly. This course opens that door.

You will learn the alphabet and vowel pointing, the noun and verb systems, and enough grammar to work slowly through narrative and psalm, using the lexicons and tools that will serve you for the rest of your ministry.

Every translation is already an interpretation. This course puts the New Testament in front of you in the language it was written in, so that when the commentaries disagree you can go and look for yourself.

You will cover the alphabet and pronunciation, nouns and cases, the verb system, and enough syntax to work through simple passages — with online coursework across the term to keep the vocabulary alive between the teaching sessions.
