Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945)
During World War II, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima (August 6, 1945) and Nagasaki (August 9, 1945). These events marked the first and only use of nuclear weapons in war.
• Hiroshima:
• The bomb, called “Little Boy,” devastated the city, killing an estimated 140,000 people by the end of 1945.
• The explosion caused widespread destruction and long-term radiation effects.
• Nagasaki:
• The second bomb, “Fat Man,” led to approximately 70,000 deaths by the end of 1945.
• The bombing contributed to Japan’s decision to surrender, ending World War II on August 15, 1945.
The events left a profound impact on Japan and the world, leading to movements for nuclear disarmament and peace.
2. Japan and Atomic Energy (Post-War Development)
After the war, Japan shifted its focus to the peaceful use of atomic energy:
• Nuclear Power: Japan developed one of the largest nuclear power industries, relying on it for energy due to limited natural resources.
• Fukushima Disaster (2011): Following the earthquake and tsunami, the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant suffered a meltdown, sparking debates over nuclear energy’s safety.
