Department of Entrepreneurship

The Department of Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC), University of Sri Jayewardenepura, is pleased to share highlights from the pitching event of the “200 Women Startups Development Programme”, launched by Sampath Bank under its flagship “Sampath Saviya” Entrepreneurship Development Programme.

The pitching session, held on 13th December, marked an important milestone of the programme, where women-led ventures presented their business ideas before an expert panel, creating pathways for equity funding and sustainable growth.

The Department of Entrepreneurship contributed to this initiative by providing academic resources and institutional support, while third-year undergraduates of the Department actively assisted in the organisation and ex*****on of the event. In addition, lecturers of the Department served as panellists, offering academic and industry-oriented insights during the business pitching sessions.

This programme, implemented in collaboration with NEDA, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sampath Bank and the Ceylon Entrepreneurs Club, reflects a shared commitment to building a more inclusive and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem in Sri Lanka through academia–industry partnerships.

Congratulations to Hansana Janinda – J’pura Best Young Entrepreneur 2025!

We are proud to share that Hansana Janinda, a third-year undergraduate of the Department of Entrepreneurship, has been awarded the J’pura Best Young Entrepreneur Award at JESA 2025!

Hansana is the founder of Yoo Boba, an emerging venture in the F&B sector, and has consistently shown exceptional entrepreneurial talent, innovative thinking, and leadership.

Sampath Bank, NEDA, and Department of Entrepreneurship Launch Initiative to Empower 200 Women-Led Startups

Colombo, May 20, 2025 —We are proud to announce the launch of a collaborative initiative between Sampath Bank, NEDA, and the Department of Entrepreneurship – FMSC, University of Sri Jayewardenepura to uplift 200 women-led startups across Sri Lanka.

Held on May 20th at Sampath Tharu Auditorium, the event marked the official signing of the MoU between Sampath Bank and NEDA and the orientation of 10 student volunteers from our department who will act as regional agents supporting these entrepreneurs.

This initiative is a powerful step forward in fostering inclusive entrepreneurship and grassroots development.

The second-year undergraduates of the Department of Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, successfully organized the annual Dansala tradition

Held on 13th of May 2025, the “Popcorn Dansala” was a joyful initiative carried out with much enthusiasm, showcasing the students’ spirit of giving and community engagement during the Vesak season. This annual event reflects the department’s commitment not just to entrepreneurship, but also to cultivating values of compassion and service.

Calling applications from suitable candidates for the post of Temporary Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, for immediate recruitment.

The applicants should have the following qualifications:

• First-class honours / second upper in BSc Entrepreneurship (Honours) or equivalent

• Should be able to undertake coursework on any subject in the BSc Entrepreneurship curriculum.

• Should have an outstanding personality with the ability to be an effective team player

• Having business experience and experience in a related field will be an added qualification

The Department of Entrepreneurship successfully organized and conducted the 3rd International Research Symposium on Entrepreneurship (IRSE) on February 18, 2025, as a part of the 21st International Conference on Business Management (ICBM 2025) at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The symposium was held under the theme “Crossroads of Creativity and Responsibility: Building Sustainable Futures in Business and Education.”

The event was chaired by Prof. Rukmal Weerasinghe, Dr. Sriyani Ranasinghe, Prof. B. Nishantha, and Dr. D.M.N.S.W. Dissanayake, and conducted as part of the Undergraduate Research Symposium of the broader ICBM Research Week.

We were honored to have Dr. Mangala Fonseka as the keynote speaker, who delivered an inspiring address on entrepreneurship, research, and innovation, sparking thought-provoking discussions among participants.

A special highlight of the symposium was the undergraduates from the Department of Entrepreneurship, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, USJ, who showcased their research by presenting their papers. Their dedication and passion for entrepreneurial research were truly commendable.

The event also featured distinguished panelists and researchers, who shared their expertise and provided valuable feedback, enriching the research experience of our students.
