Sometimes, children don’t lie because they want to… they lie because they’re afraid.
When children fear punishment, shame, or disappointment, telling the truth can feel unsafe.
Instead of asking, “Why are you lying?” try creating space with gentle questions like:
“Can you help me understand what happened?”
When children know they can make mistakes without being shamed, they learn that honesty is safe.
Trust is built when children feel heard, understood, and safe. Because honesty grows in safety, not fear.
