Awareness Workshop on Social Security for Plantation Workers

A special awareness and training workshop was conducted for the workers of Olipan Estate, located in Shanthipuraya, Nuwara Eliya, one of Sri Lanka’s highest tea-growing regions.

The main focus of the workshop was to raise awareness among plantation workers about the importance of social security and protecting their future.

During the programme, the participants were provided with a basic understanding of the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) and the Employees’ Trust Fund (ETF). The importance of being employed in a job that provides EPF and ETF benefits was also explained, highlighting how these schemes contribute to the long-term financial and social security of employees and their families.

In addition, the workers were educated on the importance of protecting their gratuity benefits and other employment-related rights, ensuring that they have a better understanding of the benefits they are entitled to receive through their employment.

Olipan Estate plays an important role in the livelihoods and economic stability of the people living in the Shanthipuraya area. Therefore, the continued existence and productivity of the estate are closely connected to the employment security and social protection of the local community.

The workshop also highlighted the value of each worker’s contribution towards maintaining the productivity and sustainability of the estate. Workers were encouraged to report to work regularly, fulfil their responsibilities diligently, and contribute positively to the productivity of the organization.

The programme emphasized that the commitment of employees and the responsibility of the organization must go hand in hand to ensure job security, social protection, and the long-term sustainability of the estate.

“The strength of the estate is its workers; the strength of the workers is social security.”
